“No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; And every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord,
And their righteousness is of Me, saith the Lord.” Isaiah 25:8; 62:12; 61:3; 52:1, 2; 54:11-17.

The chapters we were reading in course were in Isaiah. He read with us, and the very portions of Scripture which specified his sin was read by himself. We thought we would give him every chance to make the application to his own case and this might awaken in him a remorse, but it did not seem to have the least influence. He did that night—after we labored with him a long while and then left him with Brother Rousseau and Brother Prescott—confess his sins of vileness, and the conditions were plainly stated, if he would break away at once, and return to New Zealand, we would furnish him money. But he said positively he would not go to New Zealand.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 25 (1910 - 1915)

Let us gird on the armor, and let there be no delay in the Lord’s work because of a lack of means. Our workers are to turn their attention to the cities, and our lay members who have means must remember that upon them rests the responsibility of helping to do this work without delay. Brethren, sisters, reconsecrate yourselves now. For the past twenty years messages have been coming to us as a people, pointing out the need of proclaiming the message throughout the world. By brethren and sisters, will you now do your appointed work, that you may be in harmony with the Lord God and with Christ, His only begotten Son. I beg of our people to resist the temptation that Satan offers them to enter into commercial enterprises and to invest their means in the Lord’s work. This Satan is trying to lead men and women to do. The 48th, 49th, 50th, 51st, and 52nd chapters of Isaiah were presented to me as showing the work that is to be done. Study, study these chapters. Carefully read and study them, and ask the Lord for a willingness to do His bidding.25LtMs, Ms 66, 1910, par. 5

Read (chapters 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57), [and] 58 of Isaiah. I am to charge you that those who are here brought to view are in need of studying these chapters. I am to say unto you, There has been a disregard for the reproofs the Lord has given to His people. There are some who will accept the words they choose to accept, but do not make the words they choose to accept, but do not make thorough work. Nevertheless I am to warn those in high positions, carrying great responsibilities. You have had great light, and had you received it and followed on to know the Lord, souls that have not heard the reasons of our faith would have heard them ere now. Although the Lord has laid the reproof upon you, you have heeded not. Shall I not judge, saith the Lord, for these neglected duties to warn My people to understand what is truth?Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

God chooses His workers from all classes of people, and imbues them with His own spirit. So it was in ancient times. The men and women of God’s selection were of intense earnestness, full of zeal. The last books of the Old Testament show us workers taken from the laborers in the field. Others were men of high ability and extensive learning, but the Lord gave them visions and messages. These men of the Old Testament spoke of the things transpiring in their day, and Daniel, Isaiah, and Ezekiel not only spoke of things that concerned them as present truth, but their sight reached down to the future, and to what should occur in these last days.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

Mental discipline is required in our schools that the students may understand that Christ, the greatest of all Teachers, is giving them correct lessons. Knowledge is obtained by the practical working out of these lessons. All the efforts of our teachers are to be made to keep one definite object before the students—the outline of God’s expressed will. The books that have been issued by infidels should not find place in our schools. What is God’s covenant with the people He is seeking to save today, in 1899? What are the terms of salvation? What is the education which is of the most value today. We are told in the forty-second, forty-ninth, fifty-first, fifty-second, fifty-fifth, and fifty-eighth chapters of Isaiah, and in the twenty-eighth and twenty-ninth chapters of Exodus.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

Read the fifty-first, the fifty-second, and the fifty-third chapters of Isaiah. God has furnished to fallen, sinful man a life-giving Saviour. In these Scriptures, especially in the fifty-third chapter, is revealed our only Hope of a life that measures with the life of God. Read also verses thirteen to twenty-one of the fifty-seventh chapter. Verse fifteen is a most wonderful statement.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)

Encourage also the study of the fifty-second, the fifty-third, and the fifty-fourth chapters of Isaiah. These prophecies regarding Christ’s work are to be a help and a blessing to His people. The time has come when the liberty of the church of Christ is endangered. Let it be a time also when true missionary work shall be done in public ministry and in house-to-house labor. The oppression of Christ’s church would apparently be a great victory for the side of the transgressors of the Sabbath and would cause rejoicing amongst evildoers. But nothing should discourage us. God has victory for His people. Let sanctified ability be brought into the work of proclaiming the truth for this time. If the forces of the enemy gain the victory now, it will be because the churches have neglected their God-given work. For years the work has been before them, but many have been asleep. If Seventh-day Adventists will now arouse, and do the work assigned them, the truth will be presented in our neglected cities in clear, distinct lines and in the power of the Spirit.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 23 (1908)

“For many years Healdsburg has been an educating center. But the time has come when the school should be moved to a location where we shall have better advantages. Let all who can possibly do so place their money in this enterprise, as a gift. When we think of what Christ has done for us, this will not be regarded as a great sacrifice. He has given His commission to His disciples, as workers who are to lay the foundations of His church in various fields. To establish educational centers is a part of their work.” And He will work through these places. I am so thankful for the rich blessing of God that will come to His people. I opened this morning, as I was waiting for the carriage, to the fifty-second chapter of Isaiah. (Verse 1)—“see the salvation of God.” [Verses 1-10.]23LtMs, Ms 140, 1908, par. 44
“Eyes of all the nations.” [Verse 10.] Now the Lord sees a people that go to every part of the world. They have learned to build, how to plant. This is how to carry on the work in God’s appointed way. They see that these men are far ahead of them in intelligence, and they come and build their own houses, small and plain, and in that work they are educating away from the national prejudice that would naturally exist. “Salvation of God.” [Verse 10.] Do you think that is to come to them without any effort? Every one of us can act our part, and we will wish we did act our part, when at last every one is rewarded according as his work shall be.23LtMs, Ms 140, 1908, par. 45
Verses 11-13. “more than the sons of men.” [Verse 14.] Behold Him hanging on the cross with the nails driven through His hands and His feet, and there were His opposers mocking Him, “O, thou that couldest destroy the temple and build it in three days, come down: come down, and we will believe on thee.” [Matthew 27:40, 42.] This is what they were saying, mocking and deriding. But there is a sound. What is it? It is coming from a soul in agony. It is one that has been crucified upon the cross close by Christ, and his fellow that was by his side was mocking Christ, and he rebuked him. Said he, “We deserve this, but the one hanging on the cross [beside us] does not deserve it.” And the one hanging on the cross turned to Christ and said, “Lord, remember me when thou comest in thy kingdom.” And what did He say? “Verily, I say unto thee today,” right while His hands are stretched upon the cross, and He dying in human agony, “verily I say unto thee today, thou shalt be with Me in Paradise.” [Luke 23:40-43.] Now here was the very promise of our Saviour, and the thief had that comfort while he was dying. He believed in Christ. He believed Him to be Christ; he received Him as Christ.23LtMs, Ms 140, 1908, par. 46
[Isaiah 52] Verses 14, 15. Now I want that we should take the right views of the Scriptures, and do not, I beg of you stand to one side and let others do the work. You can have your reward. Here you loan your money, and you can call for it any time. It is not a gift. God’s work was a gift. He made Himself a freewill offering, and He wants every one of us to come into line and act our part. May the Lord help us is my prayer. I will not read any more just now, but I want to say just a few more words.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 23 (1908)

I am to warn our people, Give the enemies no opportunity to be furnished by you with questioning doubts of the work the Lord is doing through the testimonies. God has not laid on any man this subject. The great subject now is the commandments of God. I was referred to Isaiah, chapters 48, 51, 52, 58 and 60. These chapters should stir the souls of the people. Carry these things in your mind, and seek the Lord and work the works so essential to be done. Verses 11, 12. Praise His holy name that He gives us such comforting promises. Thank the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, praise His holy name, for the encouragement that He gives to His people that will press in the pathway of truth and righteousness.24LtMs, Ms 126, 1909, par. 4
Verses 13-15. “Many nations.” Now, remember that. This requires missionary work. This requires that not any pennies shall needlessly be expended. Why? Because the Lord has a place for all your means, that souls may be converted, as is here represented.24LtMs, Ms 126, 1909, par. 5
Verse 14. “Visage” Whose visage? The Lord Jesus Christ. Verse 15. “Many nations.” Just consider that. Why, there are right among us cities that need labor, earnest labor, and if they had it, they would come to the knowledge of the truth. Verse 15.Isaiah 52:3

The enemy is buying souls today very cheap. “Ye have sold yourselves for nought” (Isaiah 52:3), is the language of Scripture. One is selling his soul for the world’s applause, another for money; one to gratify base passions, another for worldly amusement. Such bargains are made daily. Satan is bidding for the purchase of Christ’s blood and buying them cheap, notwithstanding the infinite price which has been paid to ransom them. With God at Dawn

The Lord says to all these foolish messengers whom He has not commissioned, “Ye have sold yourselves for a thing of naught.” [Isaiah 52:3.] Yes, this is a cheap way to sell the soul. There is no end to the foolish bargains that will be thus made. We have the truth, the solid truth in the Word of God, and all these speculations and theories would better be strangled in the cradle, rather than nourished and brought to prominence. We are to hear the voice of God from His revealed Word, the sure word of prophecy. Those who will magnify themselves and seek to do some wonderful thing would better come to a sound mind.Isaiah 52:5

This demand was accompanied by blasphemous revilings against the God of the Hebrews. I was saying with great power: “Isaiah 49:8-17; 52:5.” (See those references). Hear and understand this matter. The time is now short. We must remember that we are not to be conquered by discouragement. No power can conquer Satanic agencies but the power of Him who gave His life to redeem man, dying in the sinner’s place, that all who will may repent and be converted. Christ is the propitiation for the sins of all who repent and believe in Him as their personal Saviour. The Review and Herald

To the prophet was given a revelation of the beneficent design of God in scattering impenitent Judah among the nations of earth. “My people shall know My name,” the Lord declared; “they shall know in that day that I am He that doth speak.” Isaiah 52:6. And not only were they themselves to learn the lesson of obedience and trust; in their places of exile they were also to impart to others a knowledge of the living God. Many from among the sons of the strangers were to learn to love Him as their Creator and their Redeemer; they were to begin the observance of His holy Sabbath day as a memorial of His creative power; and when He should make “bare His holy arm in the eyes of all the nations,” to deliver His people from captivity, “all the ends of the earth” should see of the salvation of God. Verse 10. Many of these converts from heathenism would wish to unite themselves fully with the Israelites and accompany them on the return journey to Judea. None of these were to say, “The Lord hath utterly separated me from His people” (Isaiah 56:3), for the word of God through His prophet to those who should yield themselves to Him and observe His law was that they should thenceforth be numbered among spiritual Israel—His church on earth.PK 374.3

The Lord is coming; the scenes of this earth’s history are fast closing, and our work is not done. We have been waiting in anxious expectancy for the co-operation of the human agency in advancing the work. All heaven, if I may use the expression, is impatiently waiting for men to co-operate with divine agencies in working for the salvation of souls. “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth…good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation.” [Isaiah 52:7.] Who will arise and shine because the light has come, and the glory of the Lord hath risen upon them? The gospel will be commended by the revelation of a spirit that works by love. “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace” (Isaiah 52:7).—Letter 318, October 15, 1906, to the brethren and sisters in Nashville and in Madison.Ye Shall Receive Power

The inner life of the soul will reveal itself in the outward conduct. Let the Word of God bear its testimony in behalf of the messenger whom God hath sent with a message in these last days to prepare a people to stand in the day of the Lord. “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!” (Isaiah 52:7).Ye Shall Receive Power

The preaching of the Word is not to be undervalued. The work for the salvation of souls is a sacred, holy work. The Lord has presented your case before me several times, and I have written out the instruction given me for you, but I cannot now find it among my writings. Since coming here I have once more been given a presentation of your case. Your work has been represented to me in figures. You were passing round to a company a vessel filled with most beautiful fruit. But as you offered them this fruit you spoke words so harsh, and your attitude was so forbidding, that no one would accept it. Then another came to the same company, and offered them the same fruit. And so courteous and pleasant were His words and manner as He spoke of the desirability of the fruit, that the vessel was emptied. The words were spoken, “Be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord.” [Isaiah 52:7-10; Psalm 23; Psalm 25:4-10, quoted.]The Desire of Ages

Strict Cleanliness Required
CH 82.1
Men who have been set apart by the laying on of hands, to minister in sacred things, often stand in the desk with their mouths polluted, their lips stained, and their breath tainted with the defilements of tobacco. They speak to the people in Christ’s stead. How can such a service be acceptable to a holy God, who required the priests of Israel to make such special preparations before coming into His presence, lest His sacred holiness should consume them for dishonoring Him, as in the case of Nadab and Abihu? These may be assured that the mighty God of Israel is still a God of cleanliness. They profess to be serving God while they are committing idolatry, by making a God of their appetite. Tobacco is their cherished idol. To it every high and sacred consideration must bow. They profess to be worshiping God, while at the same time they are violating the first commandment. They have other gods before the Lord. “Be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the Lord.” Isaiah 52:11.Testimony Treasures, vol. 2

I Feel urged to address those who are engaged in giving the last message of warning to the world. Whether those for whom they labor see and accept the truth depends very much upon the individual workers. The command from God is, “Be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the Lord” (Isaiah 52:11); and Paul charges Timothy, “Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine.” 1 Timothy 4:16. The work must commence with the worker; he must be united to Christ as the branch is united to the vine. “I am the Vine,” said Christ; “ye are the branches.” John 15:5. The closest possible connection is here represented. Engraft the leafless twig upon the flourishing vine stock, and it becomes a living branch, drawing sap and nourishment from the vine. Fiber by fiber, vein by vein, the sapling clings, until it buds and blossoms and bears fruit. The sapless twig represents the sinner. When united to Christ, soul is joined to soul, the feeble and finite to the holy and infinite, and man becomes one with Christ.Testimony Treasures, vol. 3

3TT 149.3
Christ desires by the fullness of His power so to strengthen His people that through them the whole world shall be encircled with an atmosphere of grace. When His people shall make a wholehearted surrender of themselves to God, this purpose will be accomplished. The word of the Lord to those connected with His institutions is: “Be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the Lord.” Isaiah 52:11. In all our institutions let self-seeking give place to unselfish love and labor for souls nigh and afar off. Then the holy oil will be emptied from the two olive branches into the golden pipes, which will empty themselves into the vessels prepared to receive it. Then the lives of Christ’s workers will indeed be an exposition of the truths of His word.Testimony Treasures, vol. 1

There are fearful woes for those who preach the truth, but are not sanctified by it, and also for those who consent to receive and maintain the unsanctified to minister to them in word and doctrine. I am alarmed for the people of God who profess to believe solemn, important truth, for I know that many of them are not converted nor sanctified through it. Men can hear and acknowledge the whole truth, and yet know nothing of the power of godliness. All who preach the truth will not themselves be saved by it. I have seen in vision that tobacco was a filthy weed, and that it must be laid aside or given up. Said my accompanying angel, “If it is an idol it is high time it was given up, and unless it is given up the frown of God will be upon the one that uses it and he cannot be sealed with the seal of the living God. If it is used as a medicine, Go to God, He is the great Physician and those that use the filthy weed for medicine greatly dishonor God.” There is a “balm in Gilead”; there is a “physician there.” [Jeremiah 8:22.] “Be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord.” “Be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord.” [Isaiah 52:11.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 1 (1844 - 1868)

He has long been a hindrance to the cause of God by his lack of consecration. He has so long suffered self to rule and has been controlled by a passionate and willful spirit that he is weak, too weak to help others. Unless there is a thorough reform on his part, God will not use him in His cause. His life has not been elevated, his expressions have been rough and unbecoming a Christian. His influence has not been good. He has been too ready to dictate. He has been making efforts to reform, yet he has not taken all the stumbling blocks out of the way. He has spoken against this matter and that, and expressed himself very hard against them, and has not made thorough work to undo what he has done. When he makes clean work in the sight of God, then the church will know it. God sees not as man seeth. You are of an impulsive temperament. Burdens of the cause do not set very heavily upon you; and unless you are constantly under the refining influence of the Spirit of God, you will become coarse and common. In order rightly to represent the character of Christ, you need to be spiritualized and brought into a closer connection with God. We stand on the threshold of great and solemn events. Prophecy is fast fulfilling. A new life is descending from on high and taking possession of God’s people. Some souls will have to advance fast or they will have to be left far behind in darkness. The judgment is hastening. The Word of God is rebuking, warning, and entreating men to reach the Bible standard, but Satan has brought about such a condition of things in our churches that it will be most difficult to bring them to their senses and arouse them to see their God-given responsibilities. If they will with real contrition of heart confess their sins, they may, through watchfulness and prayer, come off conquerors. But they must look beyond earthly gain, away from worldly advantages, to the great beyond. They must hesitate at no sacrifice for Christ’s sake, who has paid for them the penalty of the law transgressed. We are now living in the solemn period of the antitypical day of atonement. In the type, the sins of the people were, on the atonement day, to be called to mind and repented of. It was a time of humiliation and affliction of soul. The greatest care was enjoined, that every part of the service be attended to with becoming reverence, lest the anger of the Lord be displayed. The high priest was required to make the most careful and solemn preparation, and he must guard himself with the utmost diligence from all contamination. How much more, while the antitypical atonement is going on in heaven, should those who minister in sacred things be holy. “Be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord.” [Isaiah 52:11.] Said Christ, “I sanctify Myself that they also may be sanctified.” [John 17:19.] Those who are sent to the people in Christ’s stead should be men of God, pure in life, pure in conversation, ensamples to the flock. They have a solemn work before them, “warning every man and teaching every man, in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.” “Whereunto I also labor, striving according to His working, which worketh in me mightily.” [Colossians 1:28, 29.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 4 (1883 - 1886)

I was determined to keep this matter as private as possible, for I have had respect for you both; but notwithstanding our labors you have not broken your intimacy, and you are both an offense to God. I feel it is now my duty to tell it to the church, for I think nothing that I may say, no testimonies I may bear, will have sufficient weight with either of you that you will cease your unlawful lovemaking to one another, and God’s frown is upon the office. God’s frown is upon the church until we do all in our power to rid the church and cause of blot and stain. It is fully as grievous a sin as was that of Achan, who hid a golden wedge and a Babylonish garment. He dissembled. You are both working under a deception. You are transgressing the commandments of God you profess to revere—coveting and stealing the affections and property that belong to another. And I fear the cause of God will be disgraced by our enemies’ getting hold of the matter, and then what a handle they would make of this—a man of gray hairs, a man whose religious life has been devoted to proclaiming the sacred claims of the law of God, with great responsibilities upon him. He is handling sacred things. “Be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord,” is enjoined upon God’s servants who minister in sacred things. Missionaries for God, how sacred is your work! “Be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord.” [Isaiah 52:11.] How many are preaching the truth who need to learn the first principles—their A B C’s—in the Christian life. Mercy and the love of God lie at the very foundation of Christianity, and the iron will needs to be melted over and we have Christ’s will. Brethren, we all need less of building up self and more of the saving grace of Jesus. The light reflected from the cross of Christ needs to flash in our pathway, that we may see what it cost the Son of God to redeem us from sin; see Jesus all bruised upon the accursed tree, and for us, that we might be saved from sin and perdition. Then shall we talk of trials? Shall we grieve over the sacrifice we have to make? God forbid.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 4 (1883 - 1886)

The work of overcoming must be done here in this life. By sincere repentance and forsaking of every sin, pardon will be written against your names. The thoughts will be pure if the heart is pure. If the fountain is corrupt, the stream will be corrupt. Shall men who are conversant with the Scriptures, and who are standing in vindication of the fourth commandment, be charged in the books of heaven with transgressing the seventh? Shall Satan be given occasion to taunt the angels of God with the filthy characters of those who claim to be Christians? Will they make Jesus ashamed to call them brethren? I address you who shall have this epistle brought before you, who are leaders, who may be termed princes, among the people, “Be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord.” [Isaiah 52:11.] Humble your souls before God. Jesus is in the sanctuary. We are in the great day of atonement; and if the investigative judgment has not already commenced for the living, it will soon begin; and to how many are the words of the True Witness applicable: “I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God. Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I shall come upon thee.” [Revelation 3:1-3.]Gospel Workers (1915 ed.)

God’s work requires clean instruments, pure vessels. “Be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord” [Isaiah 52:11].—Letter 3, 1864. Have you, as heads of the different departments of this institution, assembled daily to offer prayer to God for the Holy Spirit’s guidance and for the wisdom and grace that God alone can give? In your work, have you stood as a unit, not criticizing and condemning one another, but pulling together in even cords? You could have remedied the condition of things in the office by humbling yourselves before God, and obeying the words, “Be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the Lord.” [Isaiah 52:11.] Obedience to the instruction the Lord gave would have brought among you the angels of heaven. You should have put forth personal efforts for those in your charge. This would have placed you on vantage ground. But the work the Lord desired you to do, you did not do. The Lord is very merciful to forgive your errors and mistakes.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

Our physicians are in need of many reforms. Some have not yet been converted to the truth that works by love and purifies the soul. Let them not forget the words, “Be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord.” [Isaiah 52:11.] The Lord will work through physicians who carry the burdens of Christ, and learn daily of Him, that in His power they may point souls to heaven.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)

You may be called to act in councils. You may be called upon to go to foreign lands. Remember that you can never go beyond the domain of God. Give to what you do all the tact and strength of mind and heart, sinew and muscle. Do your best. You are not to seek to be controlled by men. Christ is your Master. Remember that you are only one member of the body, and that the different members of the body are to be controlled by the Holy Spirit. “Be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the Lord” [Isaiah 52:11]. Keep yourselves unspotted from the world. It is only as the different members of the body perform their several offices that the unity of the body is preserved. You can never be an independent whole. Then the lives of Christ’s workers will indeed be an exposition of the truths of His word.Testimonies for the Church Regarding the Spirit of Unity

The Word from God is, “Come out from among them, and be ye separate, ... and touch not the unclean thing, and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters.” [2 Corinthians 6:17, 18.] These words were given to the Lord’s watchmen, “Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the Lord. For ye shall not go out with haste, nor go by flight: for the Lord will go before you; and the God of Israel will be your rereward.” [Isaiah 52:11, 12.] As the chosen of God, we are called upon to have His Spirit vitalizing our whole being. Thus it was. Not only did those who witnessed the crucifixion of Christ never lose the impression made upon their minds; but this terrible scene revealed what humanity will do when under the control of Satan’s government. It was shown what the outcome of Satan’s methods and counsels would be if he were to control the world. Those under his influence would make void the law of God. If left to themselves, men would bring in the principles of Satan’s government. Those who heard the reports of Christ’s death, even from those that were against him, were convicted. They commenced searching the Scriptures. Those that were converted to Christ told many others of the awful scene, and thus were fulfilled the words, “So shall he sprinkle many nations.” [Verse 15.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

There were many who had not identified themselves with Christ whose hearts were groaning with agony as they witnessed the behavior of the priests and rulers about the cross; and the words of Isaiah were brought to their minds: “Behold my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high. As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men: so shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.” [Isaiah 52:13-15.] This prophecy was fulfilled to the letter. How many looked upon Christ as He was passing through that mock trial, and the scourging, while wearing the crown of thorns that caused the blood to flow from the wounds. With His hands bound, He could not wipe the blood away, but no friendly hand in all that company offered Him one act of kindness or sympathy. All this was imprinted on the minds of many who had searched the Scriptures and were familiar with its teachings.Isaiah 52:14

In the parchment rolls of the Old Testament Scriptures Satan traced the words that outlined Christ’s work among men as a suffering sacrifice and as a conquering king. He read that the One who was to appear was to be “brought as a lamb to the slaughter,” “His visage ... so marred more than any man, and His form more than the sons of men.” The promised Saviour was to be “despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: ... smitten of God, and afflicted.” Isaiah 53:7; 52:14; 53:3, 4. These prophecies caused Satan to tremble, yet he determined to blind the people to their real significance in order to prepare the way for the rejection of Christ at His coming. The Great Hope (Condensed)

The disciples roused from their sleep to find their Master bending over them with a pale, wan face stained with bloody sweat and bearing marks of grief and agony such as they had never before seen, for His face “was marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men.” [Isaiah 52:14.] The disciples could not speak for grief and surprise, and although they saw their Master in such agony, it seemed as if they could not shake off the stupor that was upon them. They could not speak a word of comfort or pity. In the trial of our Saviour the words of the Psalmist were fulfilled, “I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.” [Psalm 69:20.]7LtMs, Ms 45, 1892, par. 28
Betrayed by a kiss into the hands of His enemies, He was dragged to the judgment hall, where sinful men mocked Him, derided Him, spit upon Him, and smote Him. He was taken from place to place, sent to Annas, Herod, and Pilate, and unjustly condemned to death. The glorious Son of God “was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities.” [Isaiah 53:5.] He meekly bore insult, mockery, and shameful abuse, until His “visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men.” [Isaiah 52:14.] With wonder and grief the angels looked upon Him who had been the Majesty of heaven, Him who had worn the crown of glory, and now [they] see Him crowned with thorns, wounded, bleeding, suffering beneath the rage of men who were filled with satanic madness. The Psalmist says, speaking of Christ’s sufferings, “Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. But Satan knew that the Saviour had gone into the wilderness, and he thought this was the best time to approach Him. PK 686.1
When God’s written word was given through the Hebrew prophets, Satan studied with diligence the messages concerning the Messiah. Carefully he traced the words that outlined with unmistakable clearness Christ’s work among men as a suffering sacrifice and as a conquering king. In the parchment rolls of the Old Testament Scriptures he read that the One who was to appear was to be “brought as a lamb to the slaughter,” “His visage ... so marred more than any man, and His form more than the sons of men.” Isaiah 53:7; 52:14. The promised Saviour of humanity was to be “despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; ... smitten of God, and afflicted;” yet He was also to exercise His mighty power in order to “judge the poor of the people.” He was to “save the children of the needy,” and “break in pieces the oppressor.” Isaiah 53:3, 4; Psalm 72:4. These prophecies caused Satan to fear and tremble; yet he relinquished not his purpose to thwart, if possible, the merciful provisions of Jehovah for the redemption of the lost race. He determined to blind the eyes of the people, so far as might be possible, to the real significance of the Messianic prophecies, in order to prepare the way for the rejection of Christ at His coming.Selected Messages Book 1

The divine Son of God was fainting, dying. The Father sent a messenger from His presence to strengthen the divine Sufferer and brace Him to tread His bloodstained path. Could mortals have viewed the amazement and the sorrow of the angelic host as they watched in silent grief the Father separating His beams of light, love, and glory from the beloved Son of His bosom, they would better understand how offensive sin is in His sight. The sword of justice was now to awake against His dear Son. He was betrayed by a kiss into the hands of His enemies, and hurried to the judgment hall of an earthly court, there to be derided and condemned to death by sinful mortals. It is acting the part of a thief and a robber to step into another man’s field of labor and destroy his harvest. Paul, the greatest preacher among believers, did not desire to go upon another man’s ground. His desire was to preach the gospel to those who had never heard it. He writes, “Yea, so have I striven to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build upon another man’s foundation; but as it is written, To whom he was not spoken of, they shall see; and they that have not heard shall understand.” [Romans 15:20, 21.] And of Christ it is written, “So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him; for that which had not been told them shall they see, and that which they had not heard shall they consider.” [Isaiah 52:15.]EGW Writings — Ellen G.
