Context of Romans 5:1
Therefore, since we have been justified [that is, acquitted of sin, declared blameless before God] by faith, [let us grasp the fact that] we have peace with God [and the joy of reconciliation with Him] through our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed). 2Through Him we also have access by faith into this [remarkable state of] grace in which we [firmly and safely and securely] stand. Let us rejoice in our hope and the confident assurance of [experiencing and enjoying] the glory of [our great] God [the manifestation of His excellence and power]. 3And not only this, but [with joy] let us exult in our sufferings and rejoice in our hardships, knowing that hardship (distress, pressure, trouble) produces patient endurance;

Commentaries on Romans 5:1
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 1Therefore being justified by faith - The apostle takes it for granted that he has proved that justification is by faith, and that the Gentiles have an equal title with the Jews to salvation by faith. And now he proceeds to show the effects produced in the hearts of the believing Gentiles by this doctrine. We are justified - have all our sins pardoned by faith, as the instrumental cause; for, being sinners, we have no works of righteousness that we can…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1Paul now moves from the good news about how people begin a relationship with God to the security of that relationship. Christians have a strong and lasting promise. This promise rests on God’s work in Jesus Christ, God’s love for them, and the power of the Holy Spirit. This promise shapes the teaching in these chapters (5:1–11; 8:18–39). Paul explains it by showing that believers have been moved from the realm of Adam to the realm of Christ (5:12–21)…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-11The proof of this doctrine being now concluded, the apostle comes here to treat of its fruits, reserving the full consideration of this topic to another stage of the argument (Ro 8:1-39). 1. Therefore being--"having been." justified by faith, we have peace with God, &c.--If we are to be guided by manuscript authority, the true reading here, beyond doubt, is, "Let us have peace"; a reading, however, which most reject, because they think it unnatural to…Read the comment
