Context of Romans 16:23

21Timothy, my fellow worker, sends his greetings to you, as do Lucius, Jason and Sosipater, my kinsmen. 22I, Tertius, the writer (scribe) of this letter, greet you in the Lord. Gaius, who is host to me and to the whole church here, greets you. Erastus, the city treasurer, and our brother Quartus, greet you. 24[The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.] 25Now to Him who is able to establish and strengthen you [in the faith] according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery [of the plan of salvation] which has been kept secret for long ages past,

Commentaries on Romans 16:23

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 23Gaius mine host - Gaius in Greek is the same as Caius in Latin, which was a very common name among the Romans. St. Luke ( Acts 19:29;) mentions one Gaius of Macedonia, who was exposed to much violence at Ephesus in the tumult excited by Demetrius the silversmith against St. Paul and his companions; and it is very possible that this was the same person. He is here called not only the host , the entertainer of St. Paul, or Tertius, (if he wrote this and the…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 23Gaius mine host - Who has received me into his house, and shown me hospitality. The word “host” means one who entertains another at his own house without reward. And of the whole church - Who has opened his house to entertain “all” Christians; or to show hospitality to them all. He was baptized by Paul himself at Corinth 1 Corinthians 1:14; and was so highly esteemed by the church that John wrote an epistle to him; 3 John 1:1. He was probably a wealthy…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 21-24Verses 21-24 The apostle adds affectionate remembrances from persons with him, known to the Roman Christians. It is a great comfort to see the holiness and usefulness of our kindred. Not many mighty, not many noble are called, but some are. It is lawful for believers to bear civil offices; and it were to be wished that all offices in Christian states, and in the church, were bestowed upon prudent and steady Christians.Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 23This Erastus was probably the individual Paul sent from Ephesus to Macedonia during his third missionary journey (Acts 19:21–22; see 2 Timothy 4:20). An inscription found in Corinth mentions a man named Erastus who served as a city official. He may be the same Erastus mentioned here.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2323. Gaius mine host, and--the host of the whole church--(See Ac 20:4). It would appear that he was one of only two persons whom Paul baptized with his own hand (compare 3Jo 1). His Christian hospitality appears to have been something uncommon. Erastus the chamberlain--"treasurer." of the city--doubtless of Corinth. (See Ac 19:22; 2Ti 4:20). and Quartus a brother--rather, "the" or "our brother"; as Sosthenes and Timothy are called (1Co 1:1; 2Co 1:1…Read the comment
