Context of Mark 10:42

40But to sit on My right or left, this is not Mine to give; but it is for those for whom it has been prepared [by My Father].” 41Hearing this, the [other] ten became indignant with James and John. Calling them to Himself, Jesus said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them; and their powerful men exercise authority over them [tyrannizing them]. 43But this is not how it is among you; instead, whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, 44and whoever wishes to be first and most important among you must be slave of all.

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 32-45Verses 32-45 Christ's going on with his undertaking for the salvation of mankind, was, is, and will be, the wonder of all his disciples. Worldly honour is a glittering thing, with which the eyes of Christ's own disciples have many times been dazzled. Our care must be, that we may have wisdom and grace to know how to suffer with him; and we may trust him to provide what the degrees of our glory shall be. Christ shows them that dominion was generally abused…Read the comment

Just as the role of Jesus as Messiah and Son of God meant suffering and death (8:31; 9:31; 10:32–34, 45), being his follower involves serving others, not ruling over them (9:35; John 10:11).Read the comment
