Context of Luke 8:20
18So be careful how you listen; for whoever has [a teachable heart], to him more [understanding] will be given; and whoever does not have [a longing for truth], even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.” 19Then Jesus’ mother and His brothers came up toward Him, but they could not reach Him because of the crowd. And He was told, “Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, asking to see You.” 21But He answered, “My mother and My brothers are these who listen to the word of God and do it!” 22Now on one of those days Jesus and His disciples got into a boat, and He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side of the lake (Sea of Galilee).” So they set out.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 4-21Verses 4-21 There are many very needful and excellent rules and cautions for hearing the word, in the parable of the sower, and the application of it. Happy are we, and for ever indebted to free grace, if the same thing that is a parable to others, with which they are only amused, is a plain truth to us, by which we are taught and governed. We ought to take heed of the things that will hinder our profiting by the word we hear; to take heed lest we hear…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19-20Jesus had four brothers: James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. The Gospels also mention sisters, but not how many Jesus had (Matthew 13:55; Mark 6:3). These children were probably born to Joseph and Mary after the virgin birth of Jesus. However, some Christians believe that Mary remained a virgin throughout her life. According to this view, Joseph was a widower who already had children from an earlier marriage when he married Mary.Read the comment
