Context of Hebrews 13:20
18Keep praying for us, for we are convinced that we have a good conscience, seeking to conduct ourselves honorably [that is, with moral courage and personal integrity] in all things. 19And I urge all of you to pray earnestly, so that I may be restored to you soon. Now may the God of peace [the source of serenity and spiritual well-being] who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood that sealed and ratified the eternal covenant, 21equip you with every good thing to carry out His will and strengthen you [making you complete and perfect as you ought to be], accomplishing in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. 22I call on you, brothers and sisters, listen [patiently] to this message of exhortation and encouragement, for I have written to you briefly.

Commentaries on Hebrews 13:20
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 20Now the God of peace - We have often seen that peace among the Hebrews signifies prosperity of every kind. The God of peace is the same as the God of all blessedness, who has at his disposal all temporal and eternal good; who loves mankind, and has provided them a complete salvation. Brought again from the dead our Lord - As our Lord's sacrificial death is considered as an atonement offered to the Divine justice, God's acceptance of it as an atonement is…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 20Now the God of peace - God who is the Author, or the source of peace; notes, 1 Thessalonians 5:23. The word “peace” in the New Testament is used to denote every kind of blessing or happiness. It is opposed to all that would disturb or trouble the mind, and may refer, therefore, to reconciliation with God; to a quiet conscience; to the evidence of pardoned sin; to health and prosperity, and to the hope of heaven; see the notes on John 14:27. That brought…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 16-21Verses 16-21 We must, according to our power, give to the necessities of the souls and bodies of men: God will accept these offerings with pleasure, and will accept and bless the offerers through Christ. The apostle then states what is their duty to living ministers; to obey and submit to them, so far as is agreeable to the mind and will of God, made known in his word. Christians must not think themselves too wise, too good, or too great, to learn. The…Read the comment

The author of Hebrews includes many of the book’s main themes in his benediction. The image of our Lord Jesus as the great Shepherd of the sheep (see Psalm 23) shows God's care and protection for his people (see also John 10:11–18; 1 Peter 2:25) and connects it to an eternal covenant.Read the comment

The Judaizing of the Hebrews was calculated to sow seeds of discord among them, of disobedience to their pastors (He 13:17), and of alienation towards Paul. The God of peace by giving unity of true doctrine, will unite them in mutual love. brought again from the dead--Greek, "brought up," &c.: God brought the Shepherd; the Shepherd shall bring the flock…Read the comment
