Context of Acts 20:14
12They took the boy [Eutychus] home alive, and were greatly comforted and encouraged. 13But we went on ahead to the ship and set sail for Assos, intending to take Paul on board there; for that was what he had arranged, intending himself to go [a shorter route] by land. So when he met us at Assos, we took him on board and sailed on to Mitylene. 15Sailing from there, we arrived the next day [at a point] opposite Chios; the following day we crossed over to Samos, and the next day we arrived at Miletus [about 30 miles south of Ephesus]. 16Paul had decided to sail on past Ephesus so that he would not end up spending time [unnecessarily] in [the province of] Asia (modern Turkey); for he was in a hurry to be in Jerusalem, if possible, on the day of Pentecost.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14Came to Mitylene - This was the capital of the island of Lesbos. It was distinguished by the beauty of its situation, and the splendor and magnificence of its edifices. The island on which it stood, Lesbos, was one of the largest in the Aegean Sea, and the seventh in the Mediterranean. It is a few miles distant from the coast of Aeolia, and is about 168 miles in circumference. The name of the city now is Castro.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-16Verses 13-16 Paul hastened to Jerusalem, but tried to do good by the way, when going from place to place, as every good man should do. In doing God's work, our own wills and those of our friends must often be crossed; we must not spend time with them when duty calls us another way.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13-15Assos was an important city in Mysia on the east coast of the Aegean Sea. Mitylene was the most strategic city on the island of Lesbos. The island of Samos was crucial for trade routes from Asia Minor to the west and from the Aegean Sea to Egypt.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 13-3813-14. we ... sailed--from Troas. unto Assos; there ... to take in Paul: for so had he appointed, minding himself to go afoot--"to go by land." (See on Mr 6:33). In sailing southward from Troas to Assos, one has to round Cape Lecture, and keeping due east to run along the northern shore of the Gulf of Adramyttium, on which it lies. This is a sail of nearly forty miles; whereas by land, cutting right across, in a southeasterly direction, from sea to sea…Read the comment
