Context of Acts 17:8
6But when they failed to find them, they dragged Jason and some brothers before the city authorities, shouting, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here too; 7and Jason has welcomed them [into his house and protected them]! And they all are saying things contrary to the decrees of Caesar, [actually] claiming that there is another king, Jesus.” They stirred up the crowd and the city authorities who heard these things. 9And when they had taken security (bail) from Jason and the others, they let them go. 10The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea; and when they arrived, they entered the Jewish synagogue.

Commentaries on Acts 17:8
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8And they troubled the people and the rulers - It is evident that there was no disposition in either the people or the rulers to persecute the apostles. But these wicked Jews, by means of the unprincipled, wicked lawyers, those lewd fellows of the baser sort, threw the subject into the form of law, making it a state question, in which form the rulers were obliged to notice it; but they showed their unwillingness to proceed in a matter which they saw…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8And they troubled the people - They excited the people to commotion and alarm. The rulers feared the tumult that was excited, and the people feared the Romans, when they heard the charge that there were rebels against the government in their city. It does not appear that there was a disposition in the rulers or the people to persecute the apostles; but they were excited and alarmed by the representations of the Jews, and by the mob that they had collected.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-9The charges did not stand up when the officials examined them. So they released Jason and the other believers after they paid a bond (money given as a promise to return if required). Luke shows that Christianity was not a political threat to the Roman Empire. For this reason, he argues that it should be treated as a permitted religion and not attacked for political reasons.Read the comment
