Context of Song of Songs 6:3

1Where has your lover gone, most beautiful among women? Where has your lover turned, so we may seek him with you? 2My lover went down to his garden, to the beds of balsam to graze his flocks in the gardens and to gather lilies. I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine. He browses among the lilies. 4You are beautiful, my darling, like Tirzah, lovely as Jerusalem, awesome as an army with banners. 5Turn your eyes away from me, for they overwhelm me! Your hair is like a flock of ewe goats descending down from Gilead.

Commentaries on Song of Songs 6:3

• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-3The conversation at the end of this poem shows it is not a real event. The dream ends when the young women of Jerusalem ask the woman where her man has gone. The woman tells them not to worry about finding him—he is back in bed with her, enjoying his garden with its spice beds and lilies, which describes sexual intimacy.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 33. In speaking of Jesus Christ to others, she regains her own assurance. Literally, "I am for my beloved ... for me." Reverse order from So 2:16. She now, after the season of darkness, grounds her convictions on His love towards her, more than on hers towards Him (De 33:3). There, it was the young believer concluding that she was His, from the sensible assurance that He was hers.Read the comment
