Context of Mark 6:9
7Yeshua summoned the Twelve, and He began to send them out two by two. And He gave them authority over the unclean spirits. 8He directed them to take nothing for the journey except a walking stick—no bread, no bag, no copper coin in their belt— but to wear sandals and not to put on two shirts. 10He was also telling them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that place. 11And whatever place will not receive you or listen to you, as you leave from there, shake the dust off the bottom of your feet as a witness against them.”

Commentaries on Mark 6:9
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 9Shod with sandals - The sandal seems to have been similar to the Roman solea, which covered only the sole of the foot, and was fastened about the foot and ankle with straps. The sandal was originally a part of the woman's dress; ancient authors represent them as worn only by women. In Matthew 10:10, the disciples are commanded to take no shoes, ̔, which word is nearly of the same import with , sandals; but, as our Lord intimates to them that they should…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8-11Verses 8-11 See these verses fully explained in the notes at Matthew 10:9-15. In Matthew 10:5 they were commanded not to go among the Gentiles or Samaritans. Mark omits that direction, perhaps, because he was writing for the “Gentiles,” and the direction might create unnecessary difficulty or offence. Perhaps he omits it also because the command was given for a temporary purpose, and was not in force at the time of his writing.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-13Verses 7-13 Though the apostles were conscious to themselves of great weakness, and expected no wordly advantage, yet, in obedience to their Master, and in dependence upon his strength, they went out. They did not amuse people with curious matters, but told them they must repent of their sins, and turn to God. The servants of Christ may hope to turn many from darkness unto God, and to heal souls by the power of the Holy Ghost.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-9The instructions for the disciples' mission focused on what they should leave behind (bread …bag …money … second tunic). They were to travel with little and rely on Jewish kindness to strangers for food and a place to sleep at night (see Luke 22:35–37).Read the comment
