Context of Ezra 3:2
1When the seventh month arrived and the sons of Israel were settled in the towns, the people gathered together as one man in Jerusalem. Then Jeshua son of Jozadak, his fellow kohanim, Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and his associates began to build the altar of the God of Israel, in order to offer burnt offerings on it as written in the Torah of Moses, the man of God. 3They set up the altar on its fixed resting place despite their fear of the peoples of the lands and they offered burnt offerings on it to Adonai, both the morning and the evening sacrifices. 4They also kept the Feast of Sukkot as it is written and offered the prescribed number of daily burnt offerings according to the requirement for each day.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2Jeshua, the high priest, was the son of Jozadak, who was carried into captivity by Nebuchadnezzar 1 Chronicles 6:15. Zerubbabel was really the son of Pedaiah, Shealtiel‘s (or Salathiel‘s) younger brother. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2Jeshua (Haggai 1:1; Zechariah 3:1) was the high priest (Nehemiah 12:1). However, Ezra did not use this title (Ezra 2:2; 3:2; 4:3; 5:2), which suggests the title was given after the temple was completed (6:15). Zerubbabel served as the governor of Judah, appointed by Persia (Haggai 1:1), likely after Sheshbazzar died (see study note on Ezra 1:8). He was the grandson of King Jehoiachin of Judah (1 Chronicles 3:17).Read the comment
