Context of Ezra 3:2
1When the seventh month came and the Israelites had settled in their towns, the people assembled together as one in Jerusalem. Then Joshua son of Jozadak and his fellow priests and Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and his associates began to build the altar of the God of Israel to sacrifice burnt offerings on it, in accordance with what is written in the Law of Moses the man of God. 3Despite their fear of the peoples around them, they built the altar on its foundation and sacrificed burnt offerings on it to the Lord, both the morning and evening sacrifices. 4Then in accordance with what is written, they celebrated the Festival of Tabernacles with the required number of burnt offerings prescribed for each day.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2Jeshua, the high priest, was the son of Jozadak, who was carried into captivity by Nebuchadnezzar 1 Chronicles 6:15. Zerubbabel was really the son of Pedaiah, Shealtiel‘s (or Salathiel‘s) younger brother. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2Jeshua (Haggai 1:1; Zechariah 3:1) was the high priest (Nehemiah 12:1). However, Ezra did not use this title (Ezra 2:2; 3:2; 4:3; 5:2), which suggests the title was given after the temple was completed (6:15). Zerubbabel served as the governor of Judah, appointed by Persia (Haggai 1:1), likely after Sheshbazzar died (see study note on Ezra 1:8). He was the grandson of King Jehoiachin of Judah (1 Chronicles 3:17).Read the comment
