Context of Deuteronomy 2:19

17Adonai spoke to me saying, 18‘Today you are about to cross the border of Moab at Ar. When you come opposite the sons of Ammon, do not harass or provoke them—for I will not give you any of the land of the sons of Ammon for a possession, because I have given it to the sons of Lot for a possession. 20(That also is considered a land of Rephaim. Rephaim used to live there, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim— 21a great and numerous people, as tall as the Anakim. But Adonai destroyed them from before them, and the Ammonites dispossessed them and settled in their place.

Commentaries on Deuteronomy 2:19

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-23Verses 8-23 We have the origin of the Moabites, Edomites, and Ammonites. Moses also gives an instance older than any of these; the Caphtorims drove the Avims out of their country. These revolutions show what uncertain things wordly possessions are. It was so of old, and ever will be so. Families decline, and from them estates are transferred to families that increase; so little continuance is there in these things. This is recorded to encourage the…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19The Ammonites, like the Moabites, descended from Lot and his daughters' relationship (see study note on 2:9). For most of their history, the Ammonites lived south and east of the Jabbok River. Their capital was Rabbath Ammon, now known as Amman, Jordan. David arranged for the death of Uriah, Bathsheba’s husband, during the attack on this city (2 Samuel 11:1, 14–21).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 19-3719-37. when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them--The Ammonites, being kindred to the Moabites, were, from regard to the memory of their common ancestor, to remain undisturbed by the Israelites. The territory of this people had been directly north from that of Moab. It extended as far as the Jabbok, having been taken by them from a number of small Canaanitish tribes, namely, the Zamzummins, a…Read the comment
