Context of Deuteronomy 2:19
17Then the Lord said to me, 18‘Today you will cross the border of Moab at Ar. You will go into the land of the Ammonites. Do not make them angry so that they fight against you. I will not give any of their land to you. I have already given it to Lot's descendants so that they can live there.’ 20(People also call this region the land of the Rephaites, who had once lived there. The Ammonites called them Zamzummites. 21There were many Zamzummites and they were as tall and strong as the Anakites. The Lord destroyed the Rephaites when the Ammonites moved in. Then the Ammonites lived there instead of the Rephaites.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-23Verses 8-23 We have the origin of the Moabites, Edomites, and Ammonites. Moses also gives an instance older than any of these; the Caphtorims drove the Avims out of their country. These revolutions show what uncertain things wordly possessions are. It was so of old, and ever will be so. Families decline, and from them estates are transferred to families that increase; so little continuance is there in these things. This is recorded to encourage the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19The Ammonites, like the Moabites, descended from Lot and his daughters' relationship (see study note on 2:9). For most of their history, the Ammonites lived south and east of the Jabbok River. Their capital was Rabbath Ammon, now known as Amman, Jordan. David arranged for the death of Uriah, Bathsheba’s husband, during the attack on this city (2 Samuel 11:1, 14–21).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 19-3719-37. when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them--The Ammonites, being kindred to the Moabites, were, from regard to the memory of their common ancestor, to remain undisturbed by the Israelites. The territory of this people had been directly north from that of Moab. It extended as far as the Jabbok, having been taken by them from a number of small Canaanitish tribes, namely, the Zamzummins, a…Read the comment
