Context of John 21:2
1After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and in this manner did he show himself . There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. 3Simon Peter saith to them, I am going fishing. They say to him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a boat immediately; and that night they caught nothing. 4But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2There were together - Probably residing in the same place. While they were waiting for the promise of the Holy Spirit, they still found it proper to be usefully employed. Their Master had been taken away by death, and the promised Spirit had not descended on them. In the interval - before the promised Spirit was poured upon them - they chose not to be idle, and therefore returned to their former employment. It is to be remarked, also, that they had no…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2Several of the disciples returned to fishing in the Sea of Galilee. This was not a sign that their faith had weakened. Even rabbis who regularly preached kept practicing their occupations (see Acts 18:3; 20:34; 1 Corinthians 4:12). The sons of Zebedee were James and John (see Matthew 4:21).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-23(That this chapter was added by another hand has been asserted, against clear evidence to the contrary, by some late critics, chiefly because the Evangelist had concluded his part of the work with Joh 20:30, 31. But neither in the Epistles of the New Testament, nor in other good authors, is it unusual to insert supplementary matter, and so have more than one conclusion). 1-2.
