Context of Acts 10:43

41Not to all the people, but to witnesses chosen before by God, even to us, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42And he commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is he who was ordained by God to be the Judge of the living and the dead. To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. 44While Peter was yet speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all them who heard the word. 45And they of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit.

They promised a Messiah, and their religion consisted mainly in believing in a Messiah to come. See the reasoning of the apostle Paul in Romans 4:Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 34-43Verses 34-43 Acceptance cannot be obtained on any other ground than that of the covenant of mercy, through the atonement of Christ; but wherever true religion is found, God will accept it without regarding names or sects. Though these are not the cause of a man's acceptance, yet they show it; and whatever may be wanting in knowledge or faith, will…Read the comment
