Nehemiah 4

Revised Version 1895

1But it cameH1961 to passH1961 that, when SanballatH5571 heardH8085 that weH3588 builded the wallH2346, he was wroth, and tookH1961 greatH3966 indignation, and mocked the Jews. 2And he spake before his brethren and the armyH3389 of Samaria, and said, WhatH6213 doH6213 theseH3605 feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they makeH6213 an end in a day? will they revive the stones outH3605 of the heaps of rubbish, seeing they are burned? 3Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he saidH413, EvenH5921 that which they build, if a fox go upH5975, he shall break downH6440 their stone wall. 4Hear, O our GodH559; for weH587 are despised: and turn back their reproach upon their own head, and give them upH1129 to spoiling in a land of captivity: 5and cover notH3808 their iniquity, and letH3808 notH3808 their sin be blotted outH3045 from beforeH413 thee: for they have provoked thee to anger beforeH413 the builders. 6SoH1961 weH834 built the wall; and allH3605 the wall was joinedH935 togetherH5921 unto half the height thereof: for the peopleH3427 had a mind to work. 7But it came to pass that, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the repairing of the wallsH2346 of Jerusalem went forward, and that the breaches began to be stoppedH5975, then they were very wroth; 8and they conspired allH1419 of them togetherH5921 to comeH6965 and fightH3898 againstH5921 Jerusalem, and to cause confusion therein. 9But weH3588 madeH3045 our prayer unto our GodH430, and setH7725 a watchH3045 againstH413 them day and night, becauseH3588 of them. 10And JudahH3063 said, The strengthH2388 of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is muchH3605 rubbish; soH4480 that weH3117 are notH1961 able to build the wall. 11And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till weH6213 come intoH3027 the midst of them, and slay them, and cause the workH4399 to cease. 12And it cameH376 to pass that, when the Jews whichH2719 dwelt by them cameH376, they said unto usH5921 ten times from allH376 places, Ye must return unto usH5921. 13Therefore set I in the lowest partsH6504 of the space behind the wallH2346, In the open placesH559, I evenH5921 set the peopleH5971 afterH5921 their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows. 14And I looked, and rose upH853, and saidH413 unto the nobles, and to the rulersH430, and to the rest of the peopleH834, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, whichH834 is greatH430 and terrible, and fightH3898 for your brethren, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your houses. 15And it cameH3318 to pass, when our enemies heard that it was knownH3318 unto usH6213, and God had broughtH3318 their counsel to nought, that weH587 returnedH5927 allH5704 of usH6213 to the wall, every one unto his workH4399. 16And it cameH1961 to passH1961 from that time forth, that half of my servantsH5288 wrought in the workH4399, and half of them heldH1961 the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the coats of mail; and the rulers were behind allH3117 the house of Judah. 17They that builded the wall and they that bare burdens laded themselvesH310, everyH376 one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the otherH251 held his weaponH7973; 18and the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me. 19And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another: 20in what place soever ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us; our God shall fight for us. 21So we wrought in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared. 22Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and may labour in the day. 23So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, every one went with his weapon to the water.
