Context of Isaiah 40:5
3The voice of one that crieth, Prepare ye in the wilderness the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: and the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it. 6The voice of one saying, Cry. And one said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field: 7The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; because the breath of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.

Commentaries on Isaiah 40:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5"The salvation of our God" - These words are added here by the Septuagint: , אלהינו ישועת את eth yesuath Eloheynu, as it is in the parallel place, Isaiah 52:10. The sentence is abrupt without it, the verb wanting its object; and I think it is genuine. Our English translation has supplied the word it, which is equivalent to this addition, from the Septuagint. This omission in the Hebrew text is ancient, being prior to the Chaldee, Syriac, and Vulgate…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5And the glory of the Lord - The phrase here means evidently the majesty, power, or honor of Yahweh. He would display his power, and show himself to be a covenant-keeping God, by delivering his people from their bondage, and reconducting them to their own land. This glory and faithfulness would be shown in his delivering them from their captivity in Babylon; and it would be still more illustriously shown in his sending the Messiah to accomplish the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5The future display of God's glory would include Judah's return from exile but extend beyond that. The New Testament confirms that God's glory was revealed in Jesus Christ (John 1:14; Hebrews 1:3). the mouth of the LORD has spoken: The promised salvation and judgment will surely happen because the Lord, who keeps his promises, has declared it (see Isaiah 1:20; 58:14).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. see it--The Septuagint for "it," has "the salvation of God." So Lu 3:6 (compare Lu 2:30, that is, Messiah); but the Evangelist probably took these words from Is 52:10. for--rather, "All flesh shall see that the mouth of Jehovah hath spoken it" [Bengel].Read the comment
