Context of Luke 6:36
34And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. 37Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: 38Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 36Be ye therefore merciful - Or, compassionate; , from , commiseration, which etymologists derive from to give place, yield, because we readily concede those things which are necessary to them whom we commiserate. As God is ever disposed to give all necessary help and support to those who are miserable, so his followers, being influenced by the same spirit, are easy to be entreated, and are at all times ready to contribute to the uttermost of their power to…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 20-49Verses 20-49 See this passage fully illustrated in the sermon on the mount, in Luke 6:21 That hunger now - Matthew has it, “that hunger and thirst after righteousness.” Matthew has expressed more fully what Luke has briefly, but there is no contradiction. Luke 6:24-26 These verses have been omitted by Matthew. They seem to have been spoken to the Pharisees. Who are rich - In this world‘s goods. They loved them; they had sought for them; they found their…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 27-36Verses 27-36 These are hard lessons to flesh and blood. But if we are thoroughly grounded in the faith of Christ's love, this will make his commands easy to us. Every one that comes to him for washing in his blood, and knows the greatness of the mercy and the love there is in him, can say, in truth and sincerity, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? Let us then aim to be merciful, even according to the mercy of our heavenly Father to us.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 34-36The law of Moses did not allow charging interest on loans to fellow Israelites in order to prevent taking advantage of those who were poor (Exodus 22:25; Leviticus 25:35–37; Deuteronomy 23:20). Jesus also taught his followers to lend without expecting repayment. By doing good even to those who do wrong, Christians act as children of the Most High and imitate our Father in heaven, who is merciful to everyone (compare Romans 5:8).Read the comment
