Context of Leviticus 10:2
1And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered profane fire before Yhwh, which he commanded them not. And there went out fire from Yhwh, and devoured them, and they died before Yhwh. 3Then Moses said unto Aaron, This is it that Yhwh spake, saying, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aaron held his peace. 4And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said unto them, Come near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp.

Commentaries on Leviticus 10:2
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2The fire which had just before sanctified the ministry of Aaron as well pleasing to God, now brought to destruction his two eldest sons because they did not sanctify Yahweh in their hearts, but dared to perform a self-willed act of worship; just as the same Gospel is to one a savor of life unto life, and to another a savor of death unto death 2 Corinthians 2:16.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2In Leviticus 9:24, the fire showed God's acceptance. Now, it shows his disapproval by causing the death of Nadab and Abihu. They had shown a careless attitude toward worshiping God (compare Acts 5:1–11).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 22. there went out fire from the Lord, and devoured them--rather, "killed them"; for it appears (Le 10:5) that neither their bodies nor their robes were consumed. The expression, "from the Lord," indicates that this fire issued from the most holy place. In the destruction of these two young priests by the infliction of an awful judgment, the wisdom of God observed the same course, in repressing the first instance of contempt for sacred things, as he did at…Read the comment
