Context of Leviticus 10:2
1Nadab and Abihu were sons of Aaron. They put hot material in the pots that they used to burn incense. They threw incense over the hot material. They offered the incense to the Lord. This was a wrong thing to do. The Lord had not told them that they should do it. So it was wrong. The Lord was angry and he sent fire to burn them. They died there in front of the Lord's altar. 3Then Moses said to Aaron, ‘This is what the Lord said, “People may come near to me. But those people must see that I am holy. All the people must give honour to me.” ’ Aaron did not reply. 4Mishael and Elzaphan were sons of Aaron's father's brother, Uzziel. Moses said to them, ‘Carry Nadab and Abihu away from the altar. Take your cousins outside the camp.’

Commentaries on Leviticus 10:2
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2The fire which had just before sanctified the ministry of Aaron as well pleasing to God, now brought to destruction his two eldest sons because they did not sanctify Yahweh in their hearts, but dared to perform a self-willed act of worship; just as the same Gospel is to one a savor of life unto life, and to another a savor of death unto death 2 Corinthians 2:16.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2In Leviticus 9:24, the fire showed God's acceptance. Now, it shows his disapproval by causing the death of Nadab and Abihu. They had shown a careless attitude toward worshiping God (compare Acts 5:1–11).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 22. there went out fire from the Lord, and devoured them--rather, "killed them"; for it appears (Le 10:5) that neither their bodies nor their robes were consumed. The expression, "from the Lord," indicates that this fire issued from the most holy place. In the destruction of these two young priests by the infliction of an awful judgment, the wisdom of God observed the same course, in repressing the first instance of contempt for sacred things, as he did at…Read the comment
