Context of John 21:12
10“Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught,” Jesus said. 11So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore. There were 153 large fish, and yet the net hadn’t torn. “Now come and have some breakfast!” Jesus said. None of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13Then Jesus served them the bread and the fish. 14This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead.

Commentaries on John 21:12
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 12Come and dine - Ϛ . Though this is the literal translation of the word, yet it must be observed that it was not dinner time, being as yet early in the morning, John 21:4; but Kypke has largely shown that the original word is used by Homer, Xenophon, and Plutarch, to signify breakfast, or any early meal, as well as what we term dinner. It might perhaps appear singular, otherwise it would be as agreeable to the use of the Greek word, to have translated it…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12-13None of the disciples dared to ask Him, “Who are You?”: Jesus looked different after God raised him from the dead. After his resurrection, Jesus was truly the same person. Yet his body was transformed and not limited in the same way. When he gave them bread and fish, their doubts disappeared (compare 6:11; Luke 24:30).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 12-1412-14. none ... durst ask him, Who art thou, knowing it was the Lord--implying that they would have liked Him just to say, "It is I"; but having such convincing evidence they were afraid of being "upbraided for their unbelief and hardness of heart" if they ventured to put the question.Read the comment
