Context of John 2:13
11This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him. 12After the wedding he went to Capernaum for a few days with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples. It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration, so Jesus went to Jerusalem. 14In the Temple area he saw merchants selling cattle, sheep, and doves for sacrifices; he also saw dealers at tables exchanging foreign money. 15Jesus made a whip from some ropes and chased them all out of the Temple. He drove out the sheep and cattle, scattered the money changers’ coins over the floor, and turned over their tables.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13And the Jews' passover was at hand - This was the reason why he stayed but a few days at Capernaum, John 2:12, as he wished to be present at the celebration of this feast at Jerusalem. This was the first passover after Christ's baptism. The second is mentioned, Luke 6:1. The third, John 6:4. And the fourth, which was that at which he was crucified, John 11:55. From which it appears, That our blessed Lord continued his public ministry about three years and…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13The Jews‘ passover - The feast among the Jews called the Passover. See the notes at Luke 6:1; another John 6:4, and the last one on the night before he was crucified, John 11:55. As his baptism when he entered on his ministry had taken place some time before this - probably not far from six months - it follows that the period of his ministry was not far from three years and a half, agreeably to the prophecy in Daniel 9:27.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-22Verses 12-22 The first public work in which we find Christ engaged, was driving from the temple the traders whom the covetous priests and rulers encouraged to make a market-place of its courts. Those now make God's house a house of merchandise, whose minds are filled with cares about worldly business when attending religious exercises, or who perform Divine offices for love of gain. Christ, having thus cleansed the temple, gave a sign to those who…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13The Jewish Passover was an annual spring feast remembering Israel’s rescue from slavery in Egypt (Exodus 12). Jews traveled to Jerusalem to join the feast (Deuteronomy 16:1–16). Because John refers to three Passover feasts (John 2:13; 6:4; 11:55), many scholars think Jesus must have had a three-year public ministry.Read the comment
