Context of Jeremiah 7:10
8“‘Don’t be fooled into thinking that you will never suffer because the Temple is here. It’s a lie! 9Do you really think you can steal, murder, commit adultery, lie, and burn incense to Baal and all those other new gods of yours, and then come here and stand before me in my Temple and chant, “We are safe!”—only to go right back to all those evils again? 11Don’t you yourselves admit that this Temple, which bears my name, has become a den of thieves? Surely I see all the evil going on there. I, the Lord, have spoken! 12“‘Go now to the place at Shiloh where I once put the Tabernacle that bore my name. See what I did there because of all the wickedness of my people, the Israelites.

Commentaries on Jeremiah 7:10
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10We are delivered - Jeremiah accuses them of trusting in the ceremonial of the temple instead of leading holy lives. “You break,” he says, “the Ten Commandments, and then you go to the Temple; and when the service is over you say, We are delivered. We have atoned for our past actions, and may start afresh with easy minds upon a new course of wickedness.”Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 8-10steal and murder, commit adultery and perjury: The people's actions broke most of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:3–7, 13–17). burn incense...follow: Israel's relationship with God did not rely on any magical or ritual connection. It depended on following the terms of his covenant. Their actions broke that relationship and disrespected the Lord's holy character.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 9-109-10. "Will ye steal ... and then come and stand before Me?" whom ye know not--Ye have no grounds of "knowing" that they are gods; but I have manifested My Godhead by My law, by benefits conferred, and by miracles.
