Elder Cottrell, the Lord calls upon you to help Elder Haskell in every way possible, for unless the converting power of God shall mold and fashion Elder Knox and Elder Corliss after the divine similitude, their influence will not be a saving influence. There are men who have been long in the truth, but whose ministration of the truth is perverted. Jeremiah 5:1-5; 7:1-7. The end is near. The judgments of God are in the land, and San Francisco is a living testimony to the condition of our world. And now, with all this before the men who have served, there has been a ministration that would, if continued, make the testimony God has given a matter of nought.

Already it has been proved that there was a lack of faithfulness in the men placed in important positions of trust. The simplicity of the work was forgotten. The principles God had laid down were ignored. Self-denial and self-sacrifice were not maintained. Selfishness was indulged, because the men in positions of trust were not with heart and soul relying upon divine wisdom and power but walking after the imagination of their own hearts. This Scripture was presented to me as applicable: Jeremiah 7:1-14, 23, 24.—Letter 71, 1894, p. 8. It is a beautiful morning. We have no seasickness as yet. Last evening we enjoyed a beautiful sunset. The broad ocean was all that we could see surrounding us, and the sun went out of sight in the broad waters. We went into the dining room to attend services. Under the Episcopalian services, prayers were read, and chapters in the Old and New Testaments that were very appropriate for the occasion. The hymns sung were excellent in sentiment. The chapter read first was in Jeremiah. The second was in the New Testament in regard to the shipwreck of Paul. I wrote eight pages and prepared a reported article for the press. We were on deck most of the time.

From Splendor to Shadow

A True Prophet Always “Builds”

SS 215.2

The prophet obeyed; he lifted his voice in warning and entreaty. “Hear the word of the Lord, all ye of Judah, that enter in at these gates ... . Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place. Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord.” Jeremiah 7:2-4.

Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place. Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord are these. For if ye thoroughly amend your ways and your doings; if ye thoroughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbor; if ye oppress not the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your hurt: then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever.” [Jeremiah 7:2-7.]

PK 414.2

Israel’s experience from the days of the Exodus was briefly reviewed. God’s covenant with them had been, “Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be My people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.” Shamelessly and repeatedly had this covenant been broken. The chosen nation had “walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.” Jeremiah 7:23, 24.

PK 414.3

“Why,” the Lord inquired, “is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding?” Jeremiah 8:5. In the language of the prophet it was because they had obeyed not the voice of the Lord their God and had refused to be corrected. See Jeremiah 5:3. “Truth is perished,” he mourned, “and is cut off from their mouth.” “The stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but My people know not the judgment of the Lord.” “Shall I not visit them for these things? saith the Lord: shall not My soul be avenged on such a nation as this?” Jeremiah 7:28; 8:7; 9:9.

“Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? But My people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit. Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the Lord. For My people have committed two evils: they have forsaken Me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.” [Jeremiah 2:11-13.] “Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place. Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord are these. Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods that ye know not; and come and stand before me in this house, which is called by My name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations? Is this house, which is called by My name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the Lord.” [Jeremiah 7:3-11.] “Thus saith the Lord: Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord. For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh: but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited. Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green: and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit. The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.” [Jeremiah 17:5-10.]

Christ’s Object Lessons

Chapter 23—The Lord’s Vineyard

COL 291.2

The warning was not heeded by the Jewish people. They forgot God, and lost sight of their high privilege as His representatives. The blessings they had received brought no blessing to the world. All their advantages were appropriated for their own glorification. They robbed God of the service He required of them, and they robbed their fellow men of religious guidance and a holy example. Like the inhabitants of the antediluvian world, they followed out every imagination of their evil hearts. Thus they made sacred things appear a farce, saying, “The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, are these” (Jeremiah 7:4), while at the same time they were misrepresenting God’s character, dishonoring His name, and polluting His sanctuary.

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

Lt 102, 1901

They take themselves into their own hands, rejecting reproofs and warnings, until the candlestick is removed out of his place and spiritual discernment is confused by human ideas, human maxims, and worldly policy. Though deficient in religious service, they justify themselves, saying, “The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord are we.” [Jeremiah 7:4.] They set the law of God aside to follow the light of their own imagination.

There are many who make sacrifices too conscientiously. When the second tithe is presented, some will be able to bear it and some will be driven on Satan’s battleground. The men handling the means, and who consider it no sin to get the largest share, are guilty of unfaithful stewardship, guilty of transgressing the law of equity and justice and the love of God. They are largely losing all sense of the holiness and meaning of God’s commandments. His judgment will surely be evidenced upon those who are acting as sinners. Such will be rebuked; and if they will not heed the stern rebuke of God, they will be punished as sinners, only in as much greater demonstration as their light and their privileges and opportunities were greater. The Lord stretches forth His hands, for the men in responsible positions continue to say, “The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord are we. You must respect our judgment.” [See Jeremiah 7:4.] There will be a punishment that will make them understand that they have lost their souls through their selfishness and dishonest practices.

Even some among those who profess to believe the truth will through following wrong principles become greedy for advantage. There are those in our institutions who have for so long worked for selfish ends that they cannot be trusted. They have no sense of honor or truth holiness or righteousness. Selfishness and greed have expelled from the heart the sanctifying principles of the truth. They have lost all sense of distinction between right and wrong. And because they are in responsible positions, as if position made the man, they say, “The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord are we”—holy because we are handling holy things. [Jeremiah 7:4.] But the fact that they occupy an exalted position of trust only makes their guilt a hundredfold greater.

My Guide said, “This work will be sowing seed for time and for eternity.” And then the instruction was given, “The angels of the Lord will go before him. He will be accounted out of line. But many ought to be out of the lines that have been maintained to be the regular routine, and unless they themselves come into line, they will say, ‘The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord are we.’ [Jeremiah 7:4.] Unless that temple is purified, cleansed, sanctified, God will not give them His presence in the temple of which they boast. The whole world needs to be worked, but not after the present principles. Fear not. Speak encouragingly. I have put it into the hearts of those who will come to the aid of your son. Behold, the possessions of the world are Mine. There are no territorial lines; there are no boundaries to be made. Present to the churches the true state of the long-neglected field, the long-neglected portion of My vineyard. There are hearts that will be touched and will respond. Call for means to come directly to the workers in the Southern field. I will impress hearts. Say to the workers there and to the leader J. E. White, he will be sorely tried, he will be sorely tried, but he must speak cautiously, and silence is eloquence. When there is not heed given to My words, how will they heed or respect his words? Contempt, envy, jealousy, and a great lack of principle have been the coin that have been laid out with interest; but My words have been neglected and despised.”

The Lord presented before me one year ago that even in the medical missionary work Satan will weave in his specious devising, seeming to be very plausible and beautiful. The instruction given me was that this very thing has been taking place, and the warning was given: Ye shall be cast out, smitten and taken unawares, all ye that say, “The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord are we.” [Jeremiah 7:4.] All those fine angel garments that clothe the errors in splendid representations will I strip from them, and they shall appear in their true characters, for deception and apostasy will certainly be developed unless the people are warned.

Men say, “The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord are we.” [Jeremiah 7:4.] Let them remember that God expects those who make this claim to bring true religion into the home, into the church, and into their business transactions. Do their dealings stand out pure and clean and fragrant? Do they in all places and under all circumstances give Christ the honor due Him in righteous works because they bear His name? To all in responsible positions in the Lord’s work I am instructed to say, Beware lest you lay the least stumbling block in the way of those who are watching for flaws in the lives of Seventh-day Adventists. When God’s professing people halt between two opinions, and then go over to the side of the world, Satan and his angels hold a jubilee.

God has uprooted such claims.

While my books were lying dead upon the shelves, I sent to draw some money from the Review and Herald Office and the messenger came back with a refusal. Brother H. K. Kellogg took a roll of bills and pressed them into my hands, and tears were running down his cheeks. I said no, but afterward consented to receive the loan of money. One night a messenger from heaven came to me and said, “You will have to take your books and cut away from all those who believe not the testimony of the Spirit of God but claim that the voice of the General Conference is as the voice of God. No! Now from henceforth shall it be said, ‘The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord are we.’ [Jeremiah 7:4.] Wicked works are carried on, and you will have to remove your books. Take them under your own charge, for there is not strict principle and justice and righteousness.” God sees; God knows. If I had then uncorrupted men to venture, I would have done this work we are now trying to do.

Consecration to the Work

GW92 37.1

The steady progress of our work and our increased facilities are filling the hearts and minds of many of our people with satisfaction and pride, which we fear will take the place of the love of God in the soul. Busy activity in the mechanical part of even the work of God may so occupy the mind that prayer shall be neglected, and self-importance and self-sufficiency, so ready to urge their way, shall take the place of true goodness, meekness, and lowliness of heart. The zealous cry may be heard, “The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, are these!” [Jeremiah 7:4.] “Come with me, and see my zeal for the Lord.” [2 Kings 10:16.] But where are the burden-bearers? where are the fathers and mothers in Israel? where are those who carry upon the heart the burden for souls, and who come in close sympathy with their fellow-men, ready to place themselves in any position to save them from eternal ruin?

Those in charge of our publishing houses have not always followed holy principles. There are those who have said, “The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord are we” [Jeremiah 7:4], but whose attitude has been such that God has been greatly dishonored and His temple defiled. The work coming from their hands has been marred by worldly methods and by their unchristlike spirit. Deception has been practiced with the sanction of the managers. In the sight of God these men are more guilty than those who have never heard the truth.

Many have said, “the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, are we.” [Jeremiah 7:4.] But they have accumulated so much worldly business upon their hands that they have no time to set their hearts in order. There is great danger that they will become so absorbed in the bustle and hurry of their business that they will have no time to examine themselves in the light of God’s Word. They have become confused in regard to what constitutes true Christian service.

What is it that constitutes the wretchedness, the nakedness of those who feel rich and increased with goods?—It is the want of the righteousness of Christ. In their own righteousness they are represented as clothed with filthy rags, and yet in this condition they flatter themselves that they are clothed upon with Christ’s righteousness. Could deception be greater? As is represented by the prophet, they may be crying, “The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord are we” (see Jeremiah 7:4), while their hearts are filled with unholy traffic and unrighteous barter.

A Time to “Watch and Pray”

2TT 188.1

The Lord has wrought among you, but Satan has also intruded himself, to bring in fanaticism. There are other evils also to be avoided. Some are in danger of being satisfied with the glimpses they have had of the light and love of God, and so ceasing to advance. Watchfulness and prayer have not been maintained. At the very time when the acclamation is made, “The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord, are these” (Jeremiah 7:4), temptations come in, and darkness gathers about the soul—earthliness, selfishness, and self-glorification. There is a necessity for the Lord Himself to communicate His own ideas to the soul. What a thought!—that instead of our poor, earthly, contracted ideas and plans the Lord will communicate to us His own ideas, His own thought, noble, broad, far-reaching, always leading heavenward!

Some of you are in danger of being satisfied with glimpses you have had of light and love of God and go no further. As you value your souls, watch and pray, for temptations will come just as sure as you are children of God. When you are making the acclamation, “The temple of the Lord are we,” Satan is close by your side to make you vain and conceited, and darkness gathers about the soul. There is an earthliness brought into your religious experience; a high opinion of yourself; a glorifying of self; Christ is not exalted; and yet there is the claim “the temple of the Lord are we.” [Jeremiah 7:4.]

The council meetings were not as they should have been, as has been oft repeated. Strife for supremacy, loud talk, and menacing expressions [were there]. O, had they known [that] the whole universe of God was ashamed of them, beholding their spirit and writing in a book their resolutions, which all in that great day appear as when framed in the mind. [There have been] dishonesty, fraud, the turning away a man from his rights, and disregarding the principles of the commandments of God. You have [had] men, schemes, and devising of plans, with the idea that you could, as a board, have power to do anything that would serve the conference and bring in a revenue. But it was more grievous in the sight of God because you were covering dishonest practices, saying, “The temple of the Lord! The temple of the Lord are we!” [Jeremiah 7:4.]

Religious principles have been corrupted. We will either make more pure, noble, and holy principles held by God’s heritage, or else we will mislead by false proposition, unholy schemes, saying, “The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord are we.” [Jeremiah 7:4.] The work and cause of the Lord is sacred. There is to be no mingling of human, common, unholy fire with God’s offering. This has been and is still being done. But men are blind, and see not the result of their zealous efforts. The question is, Shall those who are called from place to place act a part in the sacred work of God, use the fire of God’s own kindling, or shall they use the common fire, of which not one spark should be used, to kindle the incense upon the censers which are offered to God.

In the past, education has consisted in laboriously loading the minds of the students with material which cannot be of the least value to them, and which will not be recognized in the higher school. The teachers of the Jewish nation professed to educate the youth to understand the purity and excellence of the laws of that kingdom which is to stand for ever and ever, but they perverted truth and purity. Though they said of themselves, “The temple of the Lord, The temple of the Lord are we” [Jeremiah 7:4], yet they crucified the Originator of all the Jewish economy, Him to whom all their ordinances pointed. They failed to discern the veiled mystery of godliness; Christ Jesus remained veiled to them.

Shiloh Becomes a Warning

EP 367.2

The sanctuary service was finally transferred to the temple at Jerusalem, and Shiloh fell into ruins. Long afterward its fate was made use of as a warning to Jerusalem. “Go ye now unto My place which was in Shiloh,” the Lord declared by Jeremiah, “where I set My name at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of My people Israel... . Therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by My name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh.” Jeremiah 7:12, 14.

The ark remained at Shiloh for three hundred years, until, because of the sins of Eli’s house, it fell into the hands of the Philistines, and Shiloh was ruined. The ark was never returned to the tabernacle here, the sanctuary service was finally transferred to the temple at Jerusalem, and Shiloh fell into insignificance. There are only ruins to mark the spot where it once stood. Long afterward its fate was made use of as a warning to Jerusalem. “Go ye now unto My place which was in Shiloh,” the Lord declared by the prophet Jeremiah, “where I set My name at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of My people Israel.... There is an alarming condition of things in our churches. Says the Word of God, “Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you. For among My people are found wicked men; they lay in wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men ... the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so, and what will ye do in the end thereof?” [Jeremiah 5:25-31.] “They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.” [Jeremiah 6:14.] “And now, because ye have done all these works, saith the Lord, and I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I called you, but ye answered not; therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by My name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh, and I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brethren.” [Jeremiah 7:13.] <God will surely fulfill His word to those who will not hear, will not see, and refuse the light which He sends them.>

Those first called, who refused the invitation, represent the Jewish people. God declares, “Since the day that your fathers came forth out of Egypt unto this day, have I even sent unto you all my servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them; ... but ye heard not.” [Jeremiah 7:25, 13.] Had they heeded the call which meant so much to them, they could have united with the messengers in giving the invitation. But they with one consent they began to make excuses. Still the blessing of the truth must be set before them, to give them an opportunity to heed the message.

“But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be My people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you. But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward. Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt unto this day I have even sent unto you all My servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them” (Jeremiah 7:23-25).
