Context of Isaiah 9:7
5The boots of the warrior and the uniforms bloodstained by war will all be burned. They will be fuel for the fire. 6For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen! 8The Lord has spoken out against Jacob; his judgment has fallen upon Israel. 9And the people of Israel and Samaria, who spoke with such pride and arrogance, will soon know it.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7Of the increase - In the common Hebrew Bibles, and in many MSS., this word is written with the close or final ם למרבה . But in twelve of Kennicott's MSS., and twelve of De Rossi's, it is written with the open מ mem ; but here it is supposed to contain mysteries, viz., that Jerusalem shall be shut up, closed, and confined, till the days of the Messiah. This is an illustrious prophecy of the incarnation of Christ, with an enumeration of those characters in…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Of the increase - The word rendered “government” here, משׂרה mis'râh means properly his government as a prince - his principality, and is a continuation of the idea in the previous verse, the Prince of Peace.‘ It means that his reign as a prince of peace - in extending and promoting peace, shall be unlimited.
