Context of 2 Kings 14:3
1Amaziah son of Joash began to rule over Judah in the second year of the reign of King Jehoash of Israel. 2Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother was Jehoaddin from Jerusalem. Amaziah did what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight, but not like his ancestor David. Instead, he followed the example of his father, Joash. 4Amaziah did not destroy the pagan shrines, and the people still offered sacrifices and burned incense there. 5When Amaziah was well established as king, he executed the officials who had assassinated his father.

Commentaries on 2 Kings 14:3
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3He did as Joash - There is a curious parity between the lives of Joash and Amaziah. Both were zealous for Yahweh in the earlier portion of their reigns, but in the latter part fell away; both disregarded the rebukes of prophets; and both, having forsaken God, were in the end conspired against and slain (compare 2 Chronicles 24:25; 2 Chronicles 25:27).Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3-4Although Amaziah's spiritual evaluation was acceptable, he did not fully commit to serving the Lord like his ancestor David (2 Chronicles 25:2). David remained the spiritual benchmark for judging the kings of Judah (2 Kings 16:2; 18:3; 1 Kings 15:5, 11). Judah struggled with the ongoing issue of tolerating long-standing pagan shrines (2 Kings 12:3; 1 Kings 14:23; 15:14; 22:43).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-62Ki 14:1-6. Amaziah's Good Reign over Judah. 3-6. He did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, yet not like David his father--The beginning of his reign was excellent, for he acted the part of a constitutional king, according to the law of God, yet not with perfect sincerity of heart (compare 2Ch 25:2). As in the case of his father Joash, the early promise was belied by the devious course he personally followed in later life (see 2Ch 20:14), as…Read the comment
