Context of 2 Kings 14:3
1Joash's son Amaziah became the king of Judah when Jehoahaz's son Jehoash had been the king of Israel for two years. 2Amaziah was 25 years old when he began to rule as king. He ruled in Jerusalem for 29 years. His mother's name was Jehoaddin. She was from Jerusalem. Amaziah did things that the Lord said were good. He lived in the way that his father Joash had done. But he did not do as well as his ancestor King David had done. 4He did not remove the altars on the hills. The people continued to offer sacrifices and to burn incense on those altars. 5Amaziah made himself strong to rule his kingdom with authority. Then he killed the officers who had murdered his father, King Joash.

Commentaries on 2 Kings 14:3
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3He did as Joash - There is a curious parity between the lives of Joash and Amaziah. Both were zealous for Yahweh in the earlier portion of their reigns, but in the latter part fell away; both disregarded the rebukes of prophets; and both, having forsaken God, were in the end conspired against and slain (compare 2 Chronicles 24:25; 2 Chronicles 25:27).Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3-4Although Amaziah's spiritual evaluation was acceptable, he did not fully commit to serving the Lord like his ancestor David (2 Chronicles 25:2). David remained the spiritual benchmark for judging the kings of Judah (2 Kings 16:2; 18:3; 1 Kings 15:5, 11). Judah struggled with the ongoing issue of tolerating long-standing pagan shrines (2 Kings 12:3; 1 Kings 14:23; 15:14; 22:43).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-62Ki 14:1-6. Amaziah's Good Reign over Judah. 3-6. He did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, yet not like David his father--The beginning of his reign was excellent, for he acted the part of a constitutional king, according to the law of God, yet not with perfect sincerity of heart (compare 2Ch 25:2). As in the case of his father Joash, the early promise was belied by the devious course he personally followed in later life (see 2Ch 20:14), as…Read the comment
