Context of 2 Kings 14:3
1In the second year of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel reigned Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah. 2He was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, yet not like David his father: he did according to all things as Joash his father did. 4But the high places were not taken away: as yet the people sacrificed and burnt incense on the high places. 5And it came to pass, as soon as the kingdom was confirmed in his hand, that he slew his servants who had slain the king his father.

Commentaries on 2 Kings 14:3
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 3He did as Joash - There is a curious parity between the lives of Joash and Amaziah. Both were zealous for Yahweh in the earlier portion of their reigns, but in the latter part fell away; both disregarded the rebukes of prophets; and both, having forsaken God, were in the end conspired against and slain (compare 2 Chronicles 24:25; 2 Chronicles 25:27).Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 3-4Although Amaziah's spiritual evaluation was acceptable, he did not fully commit to serving the Lord like his ancestor David (2 Chronicles 25:2). David remained the spiritual benchmark for judging the kings of Judah (2 Kings 16:2; 18:3; 1 Kings 15:5, 11). Judah struggled with the ongoing issue of tolerating long-standing pagan shrines (2 Kings 12:3; 1 Kings 14:23; 15:14; 22:43).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-62Ki 14:1-6. Amaziah's Good Reign over Judah. 3-6. He did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, yet not like David his father--The beginning of his reign was excellent, for he acted the part of a constitutional king, according to the law of God, yet not with perfect sincerity of heart (compare 2Ch 25:2). As in the case of his father Joash, the early promise was belied by the devious course he personally followed in later life (see 2Ch 20:14), as…Read the comment
