Context of Mark 6:53

51Then He went up into the boat to them, and the wind ceased. And they were greatly amazed in themselves beyond measure, and marveled. 52For they had not understood about the loaves, because their heart was hardened. When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret and anchored there. 54And when they came out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him, 55ran through that whole surrounding region, and began to carry about on beds those who were sick to wherever they heard He was.

Commentaries on Mark 6:53

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 53The land of Gennesaret - This country lay on the coast of the sea of Galilee: it is described by Josephus as being exceedingly pleasant and fertile. It had its name of Gennesaret from גן , gen, a garden, and סר sar, a prince, either because the king had a garden there, or because of its great fertility.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 45-56Verses 45-56 See this passage explained in the notes at Matthew 14:22-36. Mark 6:52 They considered not the miracle of the loaves - They did not remember or call to mind the “power” which Jesus had shown in feeding the five thousand by a miracle, and that, having done that, he had power also to save them from the storm. Their heart was hardened - Their “mind” was dull to perceive it. This does not mean that they were “opposed” to Jesus, or that they had…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 45-56Verses 45-56 The church is often like a ship at sea, tossed with tempests, and not comforted: we may have Christ for us, yet wind and tide against us; but it is a comfort to Christ's disciples in a storm, that their Master is in the heavenly mount, interceding for them. And no difficulties can hinder Christ's appearance for his people, when the set time is come. He silenced their fears, by making himself known to them. Our fears are soon satisfied, if our…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 53Gennesaret was a fertile plain (good land for growing crops), about 5.6 kilometers long (3.5 miles) and 0.8 kilometers wide (0.5 miles). It lay between Tiberias and Capernaum on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee. The disciples first planned to go to Bethsaida (6:45). One possibility is that strong winds (6:48) pushed the boat off course, and they landed at Gennesaret instead. Another possibility is that 6:45 describes the direction of travel…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 5353. And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret--from which the lake sometimes takes its name, stretching along its western shore. Capernaum was their landing-place (Joh 6:24, 25). and drew to the shore--a nautical phrase, nowhere else used in the New Testament.Read the comment
