Context of Mark 13:10

8Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. 9“You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. 11Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. 12“Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-13Verses 5-13 Our Lord Jesus, in reply to the disciples' question, does not so much satisfy their curiosity as direct their consciences. When many are deceived, we should thereby be awakened to look to ourselves. And the disciples of Christ, if it be not their own fault, may enjoy holy security and peace of mind, when all around is in disorder. But they must take heed that they are not drawn away from Christ and their duty to him, by the sufferings they…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10Such trials (13:9, 11) would be a means through which the good news about Jesus would be preached to all nations. This would all take place first (before the destruction of Jerusalem). For Paul’s understanding of how the good news had already been preached to every nation in his day, see Romans 16:26; Colossians 1:6, 23 (see also Romans 1:5, 8; 10:18; 15:19, 23).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1010. And the gospel must first be published among all nations--"for a witness, and then shall the end come" (Mt 24:14). God never sends judgment without previous warning; and there can be no doubt that the Jews, already dispersed over most known countries, had nearly all heard the Gospel "as a witness," before the end of the Jewish state. The same principle was repeated and will repeat itself to "the end."Read the comment
