Context of John 12:19
17So the crowd who had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead were continuing to testify about it. 18Because they had heard that Jesus had performed this miraculous sign, the crowd went out to meet him. Thus the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you can do nothing. Look, the world has run off after him!” 20Now some Greeks were among those who had gone up to worship at the feast. 21So these approached Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and requested, “Sir, we would like to see Jesus.”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 19Ye prevail nothing - Either by your threatening or excommunications. The world is gone after him - The whole mass of the people are becoming his disciples. This is a very common form of expression among the Jews, and simply answers to the French, tout le monde, and to the English, every body - the bulk of the people. Many MSS., versions, and fathers, add ̔, the Whole world. As our Lord's converts were rapidly increasing, the Pharisees thought it necessary…Read the comment

This excited much attention, and the people came out in multitudes to meet one who had power to work such miracles. Many excellent things, both in the word and providence of God, disciples do not understand at their first acquaintance with the things of God.
