Context of Job 23:14
12I have not departed from the commands of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my allotted portion. 13But he is unchangeable, and who can change him? Whatever he has desired, he does. For he fulfills his decree against me, and many such things are his plans. 15That is why I am terrified in his presence; when I consider, I am afraid because of him. 16Indeed, God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me.

He diversifies human affairs: scarcely any two men have the same lot; nor has the same…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14For he performeth the thing that is appointed for me - “I am now meeting only what has been determined by his eternal plan. It is not by chance or hap-hazard that we are afflicted; it is because “God” has “appointed” that it should be so. It is not by passion or caprice on his…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-17Verses 13-17 As Job does not once question but that his trials are from the hand of God, and that there is no such thing as chance, how does he account for them? The principle on which he views them is, that the hope and reward of the faithful servants of God are only laid up in another life; and he maintains that it is plain to all, that the wicked are not treated according to their deserts in this life, but often directly the reverse. But though the…Read the comment
