Context of Ezekiel 19:14
12But it was plucked up in anger; it was thrown down to the ground. The east wind dried up its fruit; its strong branches broke off and withered – a fire consumed them. 13Now it is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and thirsty land. A fire has gone out from its branch; it has consumed its shoot and its fruit. No strong branch was left in it, nor a scepter to rule.’ This is a lament song, and has become a lament song.”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-14Verses 10-14 Jerusalem was a vine, flourishing and fruitful. This vine is now destroyed, though not plucked up by the roots. She has by wickedness made herself like tinder to the sparks of God's wrath, so that her own branches serve as fuel to burn her. Blessed be God, one Branch of the vine here alluded to, is not only become a strong rod for the sceptre of those that rule, but is Himself the true and living Vine. This shall be for a rejoicing to all the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13-14The fire that came from the vine’s own branches probably represents Zedekiah. That fire burned up the fruit. The fruit represents the land and the people. After this destruction, no strong branch remained. There was no branch able to become a ruler’s scepter (a symbol of kingly authority). Zedekiah would not have an immediate successor.Read the comment

"The anger of the Lord" against Judah is specified as the cause why Zedekiah was permitted to rebel against Babylon (2Ki 24:20; compare Jud 9:15), thus bringing Nebuchadnezzar against Jerusalem. no strong rod ... sceptre to rule--No more…Read the comment
