Context of Deuteronomy 32:50
48Then the Lord said to Moses that same day, 49“Go up to this Abarim hill country, to Mount Nebo (which is in the land of Moab opposite Jericho) and look at the land of Canaan that I am giving to the Israelites as a possession. You will die on the mountain that you ascend and join your deceased ancestors, just as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and joined his deceased ancestors, 51for both of you rebelled against me among the Israelites at the waters of Meribah Kadesh in the desert of Zin when you did not show me proper respect among the Israelites. 52You will see the land before you, but you will not enter the land that I am giving to the Israelites.”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 48-52Verses 48-52 Now Moses had done his work, why should he desire to live a day longer? God reminds him of the sin of which he had been guilty, for which he was kept from entering Canaan. It is good for the best of men to die repenting the infirmities of which they are conscious. But those may die with comfort and ease, whenever God calls for them, notwithstanding the sins they remember against themselves, who have a believing prospect, and a well-grounded…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 50The exact location of Mount Hor is not certain. Many people identify it with Jebel Haroun. This traditional site is near the Nabatean city of Petra (see Numbers 20:22–29). The phrase gathered to his people is a gentle way to speak about death and burial. It means that the person died and was buried with earlier family members.Read the comment
