Context of Deuteronomy 32:50
48That same day the Lord said to Moses, 49“Go to Moab, to the mountains east of the river, and climb Mount Nebo, which is across from Jericho. Look out across the land of Canaan, the land I am giving to the people of Israel as their own special possession. Then you will die there on the mountain. You will join your ancestors, just as Aaron, your brother, died on Mount Hor and joined his ancestors. 51For both of you betrayed me with the Israelites at the waters of Meribah at Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin. You failed to demonstrate my holiness to the people of Israel there. 52So you will see the land from a distance, but you may not enter the land I am giving to the people of Israel.”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 48-52Verses 48-52 Now Moses had done his work, why should he desire to live a day longer? God reminds him of the sin of which he had been guilty, for which he was kept from entering Canaan. It is good for the best of men to die repenting the infirmities of which they are conscious. But those may die with comfort and ease, whenever God calls for them, notwithstanding the sins they remember against themselves, who have a believing prospect, and a well-grounded…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 50The exact location of Mount Hor is not certain. Many people identify it with Jebel Haroun. This traditional site is near the Nabatean city of Petra (see Numbers 20:22–29). The phrase gathered to his people is a gentle way to speak about death and burial. It means that the person died and was buried with earlier family members.Read the comment
