Context of 2 Samuel 1:15
13David said to the young man who told this to him, “Where are you from?” He replied, “I am an Amalekite, the son of a resident foreigner.” 14David replied to him, “How is it that you were not afraid to reach out your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?” Then David called one of the soldiers and said, “Come here and strike him down!” So he struck him down, and he died. 16David said to him, “Your blood be on your own head! Your own mouth has testified against you, saying ‘I have put the Lord’s anointed to death.’” 17Then David chanted this lament over Saul and his son Jonathan.

The man who brought the tidings, David put to death, as a murderer of his prince. David herein did not do unjustly; the Amalekite confessed the crime. If he did as he said, he deserved to die for treason; and his lying to David, if indeed it were a lie, proved, as sooner or later that sin will…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 15-16The Amalekite expected a reward for killing David’s rival but was instead condemned for killing the Lord’s anointed. David himself had twice refused the opportunity to kill Saul (see 1 Samuel 24:5–7; 26:9–11).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 13-1513-15. David said unto the young man ... Whence art thou?--The man had at the outset stated who he was. But the question was now formally and judicially put. The punishment inflicted on the Amalekite may seem too severe, but the respect paid to kings in the West must not be regarded as the standard for that which the East may think due to royal station. David's reverence for Saul, as the Lord's anointed, was in his mind a principle on which he had…Read the comment
