Context of 2 Samuel 1:15
13David asked the young man who had brought him the news, “Where are you from?” And the young man answered, “I’m an Amalekite, the son of a foreign resident.” 14David asked, “Why weren’t you afraid to take it upon yourself to destroy the Lord’s anointed king?” Then David called one of ⌞his⌟ young men and told him, “Come here and attack him.” David’s young man executed him 16while David said, “You are responsible for spilling your own blood. You testified against yourself when you said, ‘I killed the Lord’s anointed king.’ ” 17David wrote this song of mourning for Saul and his son Jonathan.

The man who brought the tidings, David put to death, as a murderer of his prince. David herein did not do unjustly; the Amalekite confessed the crime. If he did as he said, he deserved to die for treason; and his lying to David, if indeed it were a lie, proved, as sooner or later that sin will…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 15-16The Amalekite expected a reward for killing David’s rival but was instead condemned for killing the Lord’s anointed. David himself had twice refused the opportunity to kill Saul (see 1 Samuel 24:5–7; 26:9–11).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 13-1513-15. David said unto the young man ... Whence art thou?--The man had at the outset stated who he was. But the question was now formally and judicially put. The punishment inflicted on the Amalekite may seem too severe, but the respect paid to kings in the West must not be regarded as the standard for that which the East may think due to royal station. David's reverence for Saul, as the Lord's anointed, was in his mind a principle on which he had…Read the comment
