Context of 1 Chronicles 9:19
17The gatekeepers were: Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman, and their brothers. Shallum was the leader; 18he serves to this day at the King’s Gate on the east. These were the gatekeepers from the camp of the descendants of Levi. Shallum son of Kore, son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah, and his relatives from his family (the Korahites) were assigned to guard the entrance to the sanctuary. Their ancestors had guarded the entrance to the Lord’s dwelling place. 20Phinehas son of Eleazar had been their leader in earlier times, and the Lord was with him. 21Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was the guard at the entrance to the meeting tent.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-34The Chronicler explains how people and institutions returning from the exile in Babylon connected with the past. The Levites and priests are important in this summary of Israel. The Chronicler believes they were central to the nation's organization. They were vital to Israel's success as a nation with God as king. The Chronicler used ancient records from Moses and David (1 Chronicles 9:19–22) to describe each group's homeland and rank.Read the comment
