Context of Psalms 85:8
6Won’t you restore our lives again so that your people may find joy in you? 7Show us your mercy, O Lord, by giving us your salvation. I want to hear what God the Lord says, because he promises peace to his people, to his godly ones. But they must not go back to their stupidity. 9Indeed, his salvation is near those who fear him, and ⌞his⌟ glory will remain in our land. 10Mercy and truth have met. Righteousness and peace have kissed.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8I will hear what God the Lord will speak - The psalmist goes as a prophet to consult the Lord; and, having made his request, waits an answer from the spirit of prophecy. He is satisfied that the answer will be gracious; and having received it he relates it to the people. He will speak peace - He will give prosperity to the people in general; and to his saints - his followers, in particular. But let them not turn again to folly - Let them not abuse the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8I will hear what God the Lord will speak - I, the psalmist; I, representing the people as looking to God. The state of mind here is that of patient listening; of a willingness to hear God, whatever God should say; of confidence in him that what he would say would be favorable to his people - would be words of mercy and of peace. Whatever God should command, the speaker was willing to yield to it; whatever God should say, he would believe; whatever God…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-13Verses 8-13 Sooner or later, God will speak peace to his people. If he do not command outward peace, yet he will suggest inward peace; speaking to their hearts by his Spirit. Peace is spoken only to those who turn from sin. All sin is folly, especially backsliding; it is the greatest folly to return to sin. Surely God's salvation is nigh, whatever our difficulties and distresses are. Also, his honour is secured, that glory may dwell in our land. And the…Read the comment
