Context of Mark 6:26

24So she went out and asked her mother, “What should I ask for?” Her mother said, “Ask for the head of John the Baptizer.” 25So the girl hurried back to the king with her request. She said, “I want you to give me the head of John the Baptizer on a platter at once.” The king deeply regretted his promise. But because of his oath and his guests, he didn’t want to refuse her. 27Immediately, the king sent a guard and ordered him to bring John’s head. The guard cut off John’s head in prison. 28Then he brought the head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-29Verses 14-29 Herod feared John while he lived, and feared him still more when he was dead. Herod did many of those things which John in his preaching taught him; but it is not enough to do many things, we must have respect to all the commandments. Herod respected John, till he touched him in his Herodias. Thus many love good preaching, if it keep far away from their beloved sin. But it is better that sinners persecute ministers now for faithfulness, than…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19-28Herodias's role in John the Baptist's murder is similar to the story of Jezebel (1 Kings 19:1–2). Like Jezebel, she pushed for the death of a prophet. Herod gave in to pressure (Mark 6:26–28). This points ahead to what Pontius Pilate later did. Pilate ordered that Jesus be put to death even though he believed Jesus was innocent (compare 6:20, 25–28 with 15:6–15).Read the comment

And the king was exceeding sorry--With his feelings regarding John, and the truths which so told upon his conscience from that preacher's lips, and after so often and carefully saving him from his paramour's rage, it must have been very galling to find himself at length entrapped by his own rash folly. yet for his oath's sake--See how men of no principle, but troublesome conscience, will stick at breaking a rash oath, while yielding to the commission…Read the comment
