Context of Luke 1:78
76“You, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High. You will go ahead of the Lord to prepare his way. 77You will make his people know that they can be saved through the forgiveness of their sins. A new day will dawn on us from above because our God is loving and merciful. 79He will give light to those who live in the dark and in death’s shadow. He will guide us into the way of peace.” 80The child John grew and became spiritually strong. He lived in the desert until the day he appeared to the people of Israel.

Commentaries on Luke 1:78
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 78Whereby the dayspring - The word “dayspring” means the morning light, the aurora, the rising of the sun. It is called the dayspring “from on high” because the light of the gospel shines forth from heaven. God is its Author, and through His mercy it shines upon people. There is here, doubtless, a reference to Isaiah 60:1-2; indeed, almost the very words of that place are quoted. Compare also Revelation 22:16.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 67-80Verses 67-80 Zacharias uttered a prophecy concerning the kingdom and salvation of the Messiah. The gospel brings light with it; in it the day dawns. In John the Baptist it began to break, and increased apace to the perfect day. The gospel is discovering; it shows that about which we were utterly in the dark; it is to give light to those that sit in darkness, the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. It is reviving; it…Read the comment
