Context of Jonah 2:7
5“Water surrounded me, threatening my life. The deep ⌞sea⌟ covered me completely. Seaweed was wrapped around my head. 6I sank to the foot of the mountains. I sank to the bottom, where bars held me forever. But you brought me back from the pit, O Lord, my God. “As my life was slipping away, I remembered the Lord. My prayer came to you in your holy temple. 8Those who hold on to worthless idols abandon their loyalty ⌞to you⌟. 9But I will sacrifice to you with songs of thanksgiving. I will keep my vow. Commentaries on Jonah 2:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7When my soul fainted - When I had given up all hope of life. My prayer came in unto thee - Here prayer is personified, and is represented as a messenger going from the distressed, and entering into the temple of God, and standing before him. This is a very fine and delicate image. This clause is one of those which I suppose the prophet to have added when he penned this prayer.Read the comment
