Context of Jonah 2:7
5The waters surrounded me, to the point of death. The great deep engulfed me, Seaweed was wrapped around my head. 6I descended to the [very] roots of the mountains. The earth with its bars closed behind me [bolting me in] forever, Yet You have brought up my life from the pit (death), O Lord my God. When my soul was fainting within me, I remembered the Lord, And my prayer came to You, Into Your holy temple. 8Those who regard and follow worthless idols Turn away from their [living source of] mercy and lovingkindness. 9But [as for me], I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving; I shall pay that which I have vowed. Salvation is from the Lord!”

Commentaries on Jonah 2:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7When my soul fainted - When I had given up all hope of life. My prayer came in unto thee - Here prayer is personified, and is represented as a messenger going from the distressed, and entering into the temple of God, and standing before him. This is a very fine and delicate image. This clause is one of those which I suppose the prophet to have added when he penned this prayer.Read the comment
