Context of John 9:36
34The Jews answered him, “You were born full of sin. Do you think you can teach us?” Then they threw him out ⌞of the synagogue⌟. 35Jesus heard that the Jews had thrown the man out ⌞of the synagogue⌟. So when Jesus found the man, he asked him, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” The man replied, “Sir, tell me who he is so that I can believe in him.” 37Jesus told him, “You’ve seen him. He is the person who is now talking with you.” 38The man bowed in front of Jesus and said, “I believe, Lord.”

Commentaries on John 9:36
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 36Who is he, Lord? - It is very likely that the blind man did not know that it was Jesus the Christ who now spoke to him; for it is evident he had never seen him before this time; and he might now see him without knowing that he was the person by whom he was cured, till our Lord made that discovery of himself, mentioned in the following verse.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 36Who is he? - It is probable that the man did not know that he who now addressed him was the same who had healed him. He had not yet seen him John 9:7, but he was prepared to acknowledge him when he did see him. He inquired, therefore, who the person was, or wished that he might be pointed out to him, that he might see him. This passage shows that he was disposed to believe, and had a strong desire to see and hear the Son of God. Lord - This word here, as…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 35-38Verses 35-38 Christ owns those who own him and his truth and ways. There is particular notice taken of such a suffer in the cause of Christ, and for the testimony of a good conscience. Our Lord Jesus graciously reveals himself to the man. Now he was made sensible what an unspeakable mercy it was, to be cured of his blindness, that he might see the Son of God. None but God is to be worshipped; so that in worshipping Jesus, he owned him to be God. All who…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 35-38Jesus urged the man who had been blind to understand the miracle and recognize the one who healed him. The man immediately showed faith and honored Jesus in the same way he would honor God (9:38; compare 20:28).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 35-3835-38. Jesus heard--that is, by intelligence brought Him. that they had cast him out; and when he had found him--by accident? Not very likely. Sympathy in that breast could not long keep aloof from its object. he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?--A question stretching purposely beyond his present attainments, in order the more quickly to lead him--in his present teachable frame--into the highest truth.Read the comment
