Context of Job 8:13
11“Can papyrus grow up where there is no swamp? Can rushes grow tall without water? 12Even if they were fresh and not cut, they would wither quicker than grass. The same thing happens to all who forget God. The hope of the godless dies. 14His confidence is easily shattered. His trust is a spider’s web. 15If one leans on his house, it collapses. If one holds on to it, it will not support his weight.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13So are the paths - The papyrus and the rush flourish while they have a plentiful supply of ooze and water; but take these away, and their prosperity is speedily at an end; so it is with the wicked and profane; their prosperity is of short duration, however great it may appear to be in the beginning. Thou also, O thou enemy of God, hast flourished for a time; but the blast of God is come upon thee, and now thou art dried up from the very roots. The…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13So are the paths of all that forget God - This is clearly a part of the quotation from the sayings of the ancients. The word “paths” here means ways, acts, doings. They who forget God are like the paper-reed. They seem to flourish, but they have nothing that is firm and substantial. As the paper-reed soon dies, as the flag withers away before any other herb, so it will be with the wicked, though apparently prosperous. And the hypocrite‘s hope shall perish…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-19Verses 8-19 Bildad discourses well of hypocrites and evil-doers, and the fatal end of all their hopes and joys. He proves this truth of the destruction of the hopes and joys of hypocrites, by an appeal to former times. Bildad refers to the testimony of the ancients. Those teach best that utter words out of their heart, that speak from an experience of spiritual and divine things. A rush growing in fenny ground, looking very green, but withering in dry…Read the comment
