Context of Job 8:13
11Some plants only grow tall in wet ground. Reeds only grow well where there is water. 12If the water is no longer there, they will quickly die. They will die before they are ready for people to cut them. They become useless more quickly than grass. People who turn away from God are like those plants. Their hope quickly disappears. 14They trust in useless things to help them. Those things are as weak as a spider's web. 15If they expect something like that to help them, it will fall down and leave them. If they take hold of it, it will not keep them safe.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13So are the paths - The papyrus and the rush flourish while they have a plentiful supply of ooze and water; but take these away, and their prosperity is speedily at an end; so it is with the wicked and profane; their prosperity is of short duration, however great it may appear to be in the beginning. Thou also, O thou enemy of God, hast flourished for a time; but the blast of God is come upon thee, and now thou art dried up from the very roots. The…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13So are the paths of all that forget God - This is clearly a part of the quotation from the sayings of the ancients. The word “paths” here means ways, acts, doings. They who forget God are like the paper-reed. They seem to flourish, but they have nothing that is firm and substantial. As the paper-reed soon dies, as the flag withers away before any other herb, so it will be with the wicked, though apparently prosperous. And the hypocrite‘s hope shall perish…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-19Verses 8-19 Bildad discourses well of hypocrites and evil-doers, and the fatal end of all their hopes and joys. He proves this truth of the destruction of the hopes and joys of hypocrites, by an appeal to former times. Bildad refers to the testimony of the ancients. Those teach best that utter words out of their heart, that speak from an experience of spiritual and divine things. A rush growing in fenny ground, looking very green, but withering in dry…Read the comment
