Context of Jeremiah 51:7
5Israel and Judah haven’t been abandoned by their God, the Lord of Armies, although their land is guilty of abandoning the Holy One of Israel. 6Run away from Babylon! Run for your lives! You shouldn’t die because of Babylon’s crimes. This is the time for the vengeance of the Lord. He will pay the people of Babylon back for what they have done. Babylon was a golden cup in the Lord’s hand. It made the whole world drunk. The nations drank its wine. That is why the nations have gone insane. 8Babylon will suddenly fall and be shattered. Cry for it. Bring medicine for its pain. Maybe it can be healed. 9We wanted to heal Babylon, but it couldn’t be healed. Let’s abandon it and go to our own land. God has judged Babylon. Its judgment is complete.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7Made all the earth drunken - The cup of God's wrath is the plenitude of punishment, that he inflicts on transgressors. It is represented as intoxicating and making them mad.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Literally, “A golden cup is Babel in the hand of Yahweh, intoxicating the whole earth.” Jeremiah beholds her in her splendor, but the wine whereof she makes the nations drink is the wrath of God. As God‘s hammer Jeremiah 50:23, Babylon was strong: as His cup of gold, she was rich and beautiful, but neither saves her from ruin.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7Babylon was like a gold cup, a symbol of great power and wealth. The Lord used it to rule every nation in the ancient Near East. The nations drank her wine: All those nations suffered greatly under Babylon’s control.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 77. Babylon is compared to a cup, because she was the vessel in the hand of God, to make drunken with His vengeance the other peoples (Jr 13:12; 25:15, 16). Compare as to spiritual Babylon, Re 14:8; 17:4. The cup is termed "golden," to express the splendor and opulence of Babylon; whence also in the image seen by Nebuchadnezzar (Da 2:38) the head representing Babylon is of gold (compare Is 14:4).Read the comment
