Context of Isaiah 43:18
16The Lord makes a path through the sea and a road through the strong currents. 17He leads chariots and horses, an army and reinforcements. (They lie down together and do not get up ⌞again⌟. They are extinguished and snuffed out like a wick.) This is what the Lord says: Forget what happened in the past, and do not dwell on events from long ago. 19I am going to do something new. It is already happening. Don’t you recognize it? I will clear a way in the desert. I will make rivers on dry land. 20Wild animals, jackals, and ostriches will honor me. I will provide water in the desert. I will make rivers on the dry land for my chosen people to drink.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18Remember ye not - So great and wonderful shall be God‘s future interpositions in your behalf, that what he has done, great as that was, shall be comparatively forgotten. The former things - The deliverance from Egypt, and the overthrow of his enemies there. The things of old - The things that were formerly done.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-21Verses 14-21 The deliverance from Babylon is foretold, but there is reference to greater events. The redemption of sinners by Christ, the conversion of the Gentiles, and the recall of the Jews, are described. All that is to be done to rescue sinners, and to bring the believer to glory, is little, compared with that wondrous work of love, the redemption of man.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18God wanted the Israelites to remember the exodus from Egypt. However, they needed to focus on the amazing event that was about to happen, instead of staying stuck in the past.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1818. So wonderful shall be God's future interpositions in your behalf, that all past ones shall be forgotten in comparison. Plainly the future restoration of Israel is the event ultimately meant. Thus the "former things" are such events as the destruction of Sennacherib and the return from Babylon. "Things of old" are events still more ancient, the deliverance from Egypt and at the Red Sea, and entry into Canaan [Vitringa].Read the comment
