LHU 203.4

As an earthly shepherd knows his sheep, so does the divine shepherd know His flock that are scattered throughout the world. “Ye my flock, the flock of my pasture, are men, and I am your God, saith the Lord God.” Jesus says, “I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.” “I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands” (Ezekiel 34:31; Isaiah 43:1; 49:16).

Chapter 52—The Divine Shepherd

HLv 325.1

A strong and tender attachment unites the shepherd to the objects of his care. Every sheep has its name and responds at the shepherd’s call. So does the divine Shepherd know His flock that are scattered throughout the world. Jesus says, “I have called thee by thy name; thou art Mine.” Isaiah 43:1. Jesus knows us individually and is touched with the feeling of our infirmities. He knows the very house in which we live. He has at times given directions to His servants to go to a certain street in a certain city, to such a house, to find one of His sheep.

2MCP 640.1

I Will Give You Rest—The Lord has given me a message for you, and not for you only, but also for other faithful souls who are troubled by doubts and fears regarding their acceptance by the Lord Jesus Christ. His word to you is, “Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art Mine” (Isaiah 43:1). You desire to please the Lord, and you can do this by believing His promises. He is waiting to take you into a harbor of gracious experience, and He bids you, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). You have had a time of unrest; but Jesus says to you, “Come unto Me, ... and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). The joy of Christ in the soul is worth everything. “Then are they glad,” because they are privileged to rest in the arms of everlasting love.—Letter 2, 1914 (Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 516.)

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, three Hebrew captives, refused to obey the command to bow before the image. They steadfastly adhered to their loyalty to Jehovah. They were brought to the king, and he reasoned with them, but they answered, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.” [Verses 16-18.] In this confession of faith the Hebrew youth were guided by duty and conscience. They had unquestioning faith in God, and they were determined to honor Him at all cost. Standing before the angry king, with the image in sight and the sound of the entrancing music in their ears, they thought of the promise made to the prophet Isaiah more than one hundred years before: “Fear not; for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name: thou art mine. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee; when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned, neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.” [Isaiah 43:1, 2.]

DA 382.1

When trouble comes upon us, how often we are like Peter! We look upon the waves, instead of keeping our eyes fixed upon the Saviour. Our footsteps slide, and the proud waters go over our souls. Jesus did not bid Peter come to Him that he should perish; He does not call us to follow Him, and then forsake us. “Fear not,” He says; “for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art Mine. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. Chapter 33—Who Are My Brethren?

DA 327.3

Of Christ’s relation to His people, there is a beautiful illustration in the laws given to Israel. When through poverty a Hebrew had been forced to part with his patrimony, and to sell himself as a bondservant, the duty of redeeming him and his inheritance fell to the one who was nearest of kin. See Leviticus 25:25, 47-49; Ruth 2:20. So the work of redeeming us and our inheritance, lost through sin, fell upon Him who is “near of kin” unto us. It was to redeem us that He became our kinsman. Closer than father, mother, brother, friend, or lover is the Lord our Saviour. “Fear not,” He says, “for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art Mine.” “Since thou wast precious in My sight, thou hast been honorable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life.” Isaiah 43:1, 4.

Isaiah 43:1. “Redeemer.” Praise the Lord! We have enough to praise God for, why do we have so little praise? Don’t you think that angels in heaven would look upon us with pleasure if we realized with thanksgiving in our hearts how much the Lord has done for us? I believe they would.

I have declared, and have saved, and have showed that there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, that I am God.” [Isaiah 43:10-12.] How may we witness for God? By continuing in disobedience and transgression? No; by rendering pure, whole-hearted obedience to God’s law. If we will let Him, He will manifest Himself in us, and we shall be witnesses, before the universe of heaven and before an apostate world who are making void the law of God, to the power of redemption.

In the schools they establish, the world is having ideas of what means the so-called higher education. But the time will really reveal their disregard of truth and righteousness. Terrible scenes were laid out before me of what would be for Lucifer, the fallen angel. He is warring against God and all who will exalt the Lord, and he will do his best to cause calamities. Read this chapter 40 of Isaiah. This is a declaration from the Lord. Read also Isaiah 41. These are chapters full of promises. Chapter 42. If you will in these latter days fulfill them, you will place yourselves where the Lord will surely do all He has promised. But although Lucifer is acting his part as a mighty deceiver, so that he will take many from our ranks and unite them to be deceived, this should not discourage us. Can we be surprised?

The chapters we were reading in course were in Isaiah. He read with us, and the very portions of Scripture which specified his sin was read by himself. We thought we would give him every chance to make the application to his own case and this might awaken in him a remorse, but it did not seem to have the least influence. He did that night—after we labored with him a long while and then left him with Brother Rousseau and Brother Prescott—confess his sins of vileness, and the conditions were plainly stated, if he would break away at once, and return to New Zealand, we would furnish him money. But he said positively he would not go to New Zealand.

God chooses His workers from all classes of people, and imbues them with His own spirit. So it was in ancient times. The men and women of God’s selection were of intense earnestness, full of zeal. The last books of the Old Testament show us workers taken from the laborers in the field. Others were men of high ability and extensive learning, but the Lord gave them visions and messages. These men of the Old Testament spoke of the things transpiring in their day, and Daniel, Isaiah, and Ezekiel not only spoke of things that concerned them as present truth, but their sight reached down to the future, and to what should occur in these last days.

He may present to the Lord the portion of his vineyard over which he has been given charge, well-cultivated and beautiful. He is to faithfully plant and sow, ever extending his domains by working new lands. “Ye are God’s husbandry; ye are God’s building.” [1 Corinthians 3:9.] Therefore if a man will keep his mind free from the rubbish Satan would pile into it, and lay it open to the bright beams of the Sun of Righteousness, he will be able to see God. Then the king commanded that the furnace be heated seven times hotter than it was wont to be heated, and the faithful children of God were cast into the furnace. “Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonished, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.” Verses 24, 25.... Then Nebuchadnezzar called forth the servants of God, and they had not so much as the smell of fire upon them. If you are called to go through the fiery furnace for Christ’s sake, Jesus will be at your side. “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.” Isaiah 43:2.44The Review and Herald, May 3, 1892.

PK 511.1

By the deliverance of His faithful servants, the Lord declared that He takes His stand with the oppressed, and rebukes all earthly powers that rebel against the authority of Heaven. The three Hebrews declared to the whole nation of Babylon their faith in Him whom they worshiped. They relied on God. In the hour of their trial they remembered the promise, “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.” Isaiah 43:2. And in a marvelous manner their faith in the living Word had been honored in the sight of all. The tidings of their wonderful deliverance were carried to many countries by the representatives of the different nations that had been invited by Nebuchadnezzar to the dedication. Through the faithfulness of His children, God was glorified in all the earth.

Pharaoh sowed obstinacy, and he reaped the obstinacy that he had sown. God did not compel Pharaoh to disbelieve. The seed of unbelief was left to germinate and produce a harvest of its kind—infidelity. This resistance continued until Pharaoh looked upon the devastated land, upon the cold dead form of his first-born and the first born of all in his house and in all the families in his kingdom, until the Lord could say to Israel, “I gave Egypt for thee.” [Isaiah 43:3.]

The Lord declared in regard to the deliverance of the children of Israel, “I have given Egypt for thee.” [Isaiah 43:3.] In order that the purpose of God might be accomplished, the land was laid desolate. God delivered Israel after four hundred years of bondage, and took them into the wilderness, that they might be under the guidance of the unseen leader and teacher. He who is wonderful in counsel led them in the ways of God. He wrought in behalf of His chosen ones as a living, personal Redeemer, to show his own power over nature and science, as the God, the mighty God, who made nature. He would teach His people that if they were contrite in heart, a powerful Ruler would work for them with nature for His servant, to show his supreme command and control over all powers that ventured to oppress. He would stand forth as the only God, showing them that there is no god before Him.

Christ was using the great name of God that was given to Moses to express the idea of the eternal presence. [See Exodus 3:14.] Isaiah also saw Christ, and his prophetic words are full of significance. He says, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). Speaking through him, the Lord says, “I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour.... Fear not: for I am with thee.... I, even I, am the Lord; and beside me there is no saviour.... Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, that I am God. Yea, before the day was I am he.... I am the Lord, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King” (Isaiah 43:3-15).... God has given us the gift of speech that we may recite to others the dealing of God with us, that his love and compassion may touch their hearts, and that praise may also arise from their souls to him who hath called them out of darkness into his marvelous light. The Lord has said, “Ye are my witnesses.” [Isaiah 43:10.] But all who are called to be witnesses for Christ must learn of him, that they may be efficient witnesses. As children of the heavenly King, you should educate yourselves to bear testimony in a clear, distinct voice, and in such a manner that no one may have the impression that you are reluctant to speak of the mercies of the Lord. In social meeting, prayer should be offered so that all may be edified, and those who take part in this exercise should follow the example given us in the Lord’s beautiful prayer for the world. The prayer of Jesus is simple, clear, comprehensive, and yet not long and spiritless as are the dry prayers that are often offered in public. These spiritless prayers better not be uttered; for they fail to bless or edify, and are a mere form without vital power.

The truth, to be genuine in its influence on the human heart, must be acknowledged before the universe of heaven, before the worlds unfallen, and before men. Let no one entertain the idea that he may work out his own salvation or receive the smallest spiritual blessing which the gospel offers, by stealth. The Lord calls for open, manly confession. “Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord” (Isaiah 43:10). Nothing can be effectually gained in advancing in the knowledge of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ until the unbelieving one, longing after Christian excellence of character, shall become as God has intended—a spectacle unto the world, to angels, and to men, a city set on a hill that cannot be hid....

The root of the tree has a double office to fill. It is to hold fast by its tendrils to the earth, while it takes to itself the nourishment desired. Thus it is with the Christian. When his union with Christ, the parent stalk, is complete, when he feeds upon Him, currents of spiritual strength are given to the branches. Can the leaves of such a branch wither? Never. As long as the soul reaches toward Christ, there is little danger that the leaves will wilt and droop and decay. And the temptations which may come in like a tempest will not uproot him. The true Christian draws his motives of action from his deep love for his Redeemer. His affection for his Master is true and holy. And it is the cheerful, lovable Christian of whom Christ says, “Ye are my witnesses” (Isaiah 43:10)....

How great was my burden in that tent, in my feebleness that night! I know that the Lord was graciously willing to forgive sins and pardon the sinner, and my heart was stirred with an intensity of desire that all upon the campground should see the salvation of the Lord. To this people God had committed sacred trusts. He had made them repositories of light in regard to His law, and should Christ say of these highly favored, “Ye are both ignorant of the Scriptures and of the power of God”? [Matthew 22:29.] Should those who made so high a profession, because of their want of pure and undefiled religion dishonor the world’s Redeemer by their unconsecrated lives? “Ye are my witnesses,” saith the Lord. [Isaiah 43:10.] Should the people of God remain in a backslidden state, unconsecrated, unholy in life and in character? How then could Christ say of them, “Ye are the light of the world” and represent them as a city that is set upon a hill or a light upon a candlestick, giving light to all that are in the house? The morning was very dull. Heavy clouds covered the sky, and at seven o’clock rain began to fall. We succeeded in reaching the meeting place without a wetting and found an interested congregation. I was lifted above my infirmities and spoke with much freedom, showing the necessity of having a personal experience in the things of God. I tried to impress those present with the importance of improving the talent of voice. The voice is God’s gift to man, and by persevering effort we may learn to speak to God in prayer with clear, distinct voices. The gift of speech has been greatly perverted. Many in offering prayer speak in low, indistinct tones, covering the face with the hands, as if they were ashamed. They do not come to the throne of grace with Christlike assurance, lifting up holy hands to God without fear or doubting. Whether praying of bearing testimony, they murmur a few unintelligible words. Who is edified or encouraged or blessed by such speaking? “Ye are my witnesses,” God says [Isaiah 43:10]; but how can He be glorified by testimonies and prayers that cannot be heard by the assembly?

When offering prayer, some put their face in their hands and in a low, moaning voice make their requests to God. Such prayers would be more appropriate in the closet than in public worship. Christ has said, Ye are my witnesses [Isaiah 43:10], and how can His holy name be glorified by this defective habit of praying and bearing testimony? Certainly there is nothing in these exercises, conducted in this way, that would bear representation as faithful soldiers of the cross of Christ. The voice is a power for good and should not be mistreated or misapplied in any way and in any place. It is a duty, individually, to make all that it is possible of the human voice in order that it may prove a powerful instrument, through culture, to honor and glorify God. Colporteurs, canvassers, those giving Bible readings, need to give attention to the voice, for, rightly trained and wisely employed, it is a power for good.

Not until the work of our great High Priest is done in the heavenly sanctuary will our work be done. The work of teaching will go on, the care of the sick will rest upon us, and institutions will be needed for the treatment of the afflicted, and means will be required for the extension of the knowledge of the glorious gospel of God and our Lord Jesus Christ, until a people shall be found without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, standing blameless before heaven, and prepared for the great day of the Lord.

And if you carry any other spirit in your business, then let me tell you, you need to be converted; you need to repent before God that you have lost a day, that you have hurt your soul, that you have acted as a Christian ought not to act. Ye are My witnesses, saith the Lord [Isaiah 43:10]; therefore we are to represent Jesus Christ every day of our life. And God will help us in this matter. When our Saviour shall come in the clouds of heaven we know not; we know not the day; we know not the hour; we know not the time; therefore, every moment is to be spent as though it might be our last. We are to do work for time and eternity.

A number of outsiders attend these meetings. Elder Daniells is here and speaks evenings. Last Sabbath we had a good congregation, and I spoke again from John 14. I had great liberty, and the blessing of God rested upon us. Then we had an excellent social meeting, good testimonies were borne after which I spoke a few words about the human voice—the rich gift of God to us—and begged of them not to lower and belittle God’s gift, but to speak clearly and distinctly as God meant they should when He blessed them with tongue and utterance. And the Lord said, “Ye are my witnesses” [Isaiah 43:10], communicate to others the light and treasures of grace and truth which I have given to you. Elder Daniells said it was fifty percent better than any social meeting he had attended in the colonies. The presence of Jesus was in our very midst.

“Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord.” [Isaiah 43:10.] “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” [Matthew 5:14.] God has given His people great light, and He expects them to walk in the light, to move under the direct influence of the light, and to repeat over and over, as did Paul, God’s miraculous leadings in the past. The prophets have prophesied of this time in which we live. They spoke of future events, and we have the benefit of their enlightenment. “Not unto themselves, but unto us did they minister the things which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven, which things the angels desire to look into.” [1 Peter 1:12.]

God expects every man to do his duty. “Ye are my witnesses,” saith the Lord. [Isaiah 43:10.] Call men to repentance. Set before them in clear, distinct lines their danger; point them to Him who taketh away the sin of the world. Carry the offer of Christ’s mercy and righteousness to those who are lost. Many will resent your testimony; you can expect nothing else, for they resented the testimony of the Son of God. But if we stand in God, faithful and true, our testimony will be as a hammer breaking in pieces the rocky hearts, a fire consuming the refuge of lies.

Peter gave voice to the words that Satan suggested to him when he denied his Lord with cursing and swearing: but thank God, he was afterwards converted and stood forth a bold witness for Christ. The life of the Christian is hid with Christ in God, and God acknowledges those who are His, declaring, “Ye are my witnesses.” [Isaiah 43:10.] They testify that divine power is influencing their hearts and shaping their conduct. Bro. James of Kellyville had a nice little farm, on which there rested a debt. When hard times came, he could not meet the interest, and the farm was sold from under him. He now takes his family to “regions beyond.” [2 Corinthians 10:16.] In my talk last Sabbath I encouraged him that this might be the very way the Lord was working to bring the truth to those who would receive it into good and honest hearts. He would permit trials to come upon His people in temporal things, uprooting them from their homes and sending them into new places to let their light shine forth to others in moral darkness who must be warned. All who have been converted from error to truth have a sacred responsibility to lift the standard for Jesus, wherever they may be. “Ye are my witnesses,” saith the great Teacher. [Isaiah 43:10.]

The truth for this time is a testing truth which should stimulate the mind, purify the soul, and sanctify the desires. Its reality should be demonstrated in saving those who are perishing out of Christ. God’s work is to be done in His way and in His Spirit.

The true Christian draws his motives for action from his deep love for his Redeemer. His affection for his Master is true and holy. No man can serve two masters. If tobacco is your master, if it has brought all your forces under the control of the pernicious appetite, it is your master, and you are its slave. How then can you serve your tobacco and your God, sending up the fumes of tobacco before you go into the prayer meeting so that your mind is so confused that you do not know what you are about? Why? Because the stimulant of tobacco and the stimulant of the Holy Spirit of God never combine to give meaning to inspiration in the meeting that you may give the testimony clear from the courts of heaven that God wants you to give. “Ye are my witnesses,” says God [Isaiah 43:10], and God wants us by precept and example to represent Christ in our world. He represented the Father, and He left the work in our hands to attend to the needy and the distressed, and to have something to help them that they may have the blessing of relief, the necessities of suffering humanity. But if we use it up unwisely, imprudently, He will say, “Thou wicked and slothful servant, why did not you take My talent, why did you not put it out to the exchangers? Why did not you use My gift that you could double it for My service?” [See Matthew 25:26, 27.] God wants us to win souls for Him; and then what? You are to begin to work with the talent which God has lent you, and then every gift there is, to the praise of heaven.

Then I presented before them that the Christian life is a continual service to Jesus Christ, and when they come to meeting on the Sabbath they are under service to the Master, Jesus Christ, to do His work, act their part, and exercise their God-given abilities in bearing testimony for Jesus Christ. “Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord.” [Isaiah 43:10.]

An adulterated Christianity surrounds us on every side. It is the time when we are to heed the third angel’s message and to take to ourselves the instruction of the true witness. “Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and remove thy candlestick out of its place except thou repent.” [Revelation 2:5.] You should turn unto the Lord by obedience to his commandments, turn unto him in prayer, and by watching unto prayer, or else you will be found walking in darkness. You are not keeping the commandments of God, for you walk in the way of your neighbors. You are so blinded by the sophistries of Satan. Let this question come home to your soul, “What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul, or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” [Mark 8:36, 37.] Is eternal life of no value to you? Is this world of more value to you than heaven? Will you permit it to absorb your mind, and engross your attention? Will you permit your neighbors to choose for you and fail [to] follow that which your conscience convinces you is true? Will it pay to sacrifice heaven? God calls upon you to change your course of action, both for your own soul’s sake and for the sake of your children. Let your lives bear a living testimony for God. There are not a sufficient number of ordained ministers to do all the work that is necessary to be done. The truth, to be genuine in its influence on the human heart, must be acknowledged before the universe of heaven, before unfallen worlds, and before men. When a man is filled with the Holy Spirit, the more severely he is tested and tried, the more clearly he proves that he is a true representative of Christ in word, in spirit, in action. Christ declares, “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father” (John 14:12). What is the promise to every true believer? “Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you” (Acts 1:8). Might we not better, my brethren and sisters, take ourselves to task for our unlikeness to Christ? He says, “Ye are my witnesses” (Isaiah 43:10). What kind of witnesses are we for truth and righteousness? Are we striving with all our God-given powers to reach the measure of the stature of men and women in Christ? The root of the tree has a double office to fill. It is to hold fast by its tendrils to the earth, while it takes to itself the nourishment desired. Thus it is with the Christian. When his union with Christ, the parent stalk, is complete, when he feeds upon Him, currents of spiritual strength are given to the branches. Can the leaves of such a branch wither? Never. As long as the soul reaches toward Christ, there is little danger that the leaves will wilt and droop and decay. And the temptations which may come in like a tempest will not uproot him. “And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: This do, and thou shalt live.” [Luke 10:25-28.] Christ will not accept a divided heart. The life of the receiver of truth should witness to the change wrought by the transformation of character. “Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord.” [Isaiah 43:10.] Why? Because they have an indwelling Saviour, who works the mind and heart to reveal that love for Christ which leads them to do His will, not their own. They have that faith which works by love and purifies the soul.

Those thus born again will go from our institution prepared to speak to others of the power of Him who has done so much for them. Jesus says of them, “Ye are my witnesses.” [Isaiah 43:10.] God grants them a renewal of life and health, that they may go forth to impart to others the knowledge they have obtained, to tell their friends that they may keep well by eating temperately and drinking temperately, discarding tea, coffee, drugs of all kinds, and alcohol in all its forms. They go from the sanitarium as newborn souls, converted and enlightened, knowing that by being temperate in all things, and depending on Him who gave His life for them, they may work for God.

We are a spectacle to worlds unfallen, to angels, and to men. “Ye are my witnesses,” said Christ. “Ye are My witnesses,” says Jesus. [Isaiah 43:10.] God is the author of truth. The gospel is invincible, because it is God’s Word. God has a deep interest in the final triumph of the truth. Its perpetuity is assured. The plan of salvation has been made. The terms are given. He who made an infinite sacrifice for the salvation of mankind is able to take away our sin. He has resources for making sure the perpetuity of the Word, that it shall never become weakened through vanities of human invention. The standard is to be kept elevated.

In times of distress we are to seek unto God. Pour not your criticisms and complaints into human ears; for thus you may bring discouragement to souls, causing them to stumble and fall. Take all your troubles to God. He will never misunderstand you. He is the refuge of His people. Under the shadow of His protection they can pass unharmed. Believe in Him and trust Him. He will not give you up to the spoiler. Believe, believe! Flee to the stronghold, and learn that the power of the gospel to strengthen passes all comprehension. Open the door, and let Jesus in to fill your heart with His peace, His grace, His love, His joy. Then Christ can say of you, “Ye are my witnesses.” [Isaiah 43:10.]

Religion is more than a mere theory. It is more than a passive acquiescence to truth. It is a living principle brought into the life, manifested in the daily occupation. True love in the home requires sacrifice, especially in the humble home. God values and commends hard, honest work. Let all remember that they belong to Christ, that they are brought with a price, and that God will be honored by their lives, as they faithfully perform their daily duties. Christ says to all, “Ye are My witnesses. Honor Me, and I will honor you. I will confess you before My Father, if you will confess Me by dealing justly and walking humbly with God.” [See Isaiah 43:10; 1 Samuel 2:30; Matthew 10:32; Micah 6:8.] A man may not be eloquent; he may not put himself forward in religious services, yet if he does his best, the Lord will help him as he lays his foundation upon the Rock and strives to carry out correct principles. Such a man will not betray sacred trusts.

To those who have passed through the trying tests that have come all along the years, the Lord says, “Ye are My witnesses.” [Isaiah 43:10.] All who have been enlightened are to be watchful, and strengthen the things that remain, those who are ready to die spiritually by reason of the false theories brought in through misapplication of the Scriptures.

Look beyond the present. Never despond; never murmur. “Ye are My witnesses,” saith the One who in your behalf gave Himself up to a death of shame. The Holy Spirit is waiting to unite in sympathy with every true believer and to make him a laborer together with God. Then let no means be neglected that will advance the work to be done. There must be no self-exaltation and far more of prayer. Behold Christ, our pattern, how He travailed in soul for the salvation of men. Chapter 19—History and Prophecy

Ed 173.3

The Bible reveals the true philosophy of history. In those words of matchless beauty and tenderness spoken by the apostle Paul to the sages of Athens is set forth God’s purpose in the creation and distribution of races and nations: He “hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; that they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after Him, and find Him.” Acts 17:26, 27. God declares that whosoever will may come “into the bond of the covenant.” Ezekiel 20:37. In the creation it was His purpose that the earth be inhabited by beings whose existence should be a blessing to themselves and to one another, and an honor to their Creator. All who will may identify themselves with this purpose. Of them it is spoken, “This people have I formed for Myself; they shall show forth My praise.” Isaiah 43:21.

It is not enough that those who know the truth merely have a knowledge of it. They are to walk and work in love, conforming themselves to the law of God. The Lord declares, I will put my laws in their minds, and write them in their hearts. God is the mighty all-powerful agency in this work of transformation. The writing of the law of God in the heart is accomplished by the Holy Spirit. Divine relationship is to be renewed between God and man. “I will be their God,” He says, “and they shall be my people.” [2 Corinthians 6:16.] Sin will not be harbored. In the refining furnace all dross will be consumed. Saith God, “There is no attribute of My nature that I will not freely give in order that man may reflect My image.” When we place ourselves in this relation to God, we can represent Christ. Only a spiritual people can shine as lights in the world. God’s people are to be a peculiar people, zealous of good works. “This people have I formed for myself,” God says; “thou shalt show forth my praise.” [Isaiah 43:21.] We may have the Lord as our sun and shield, and our exceeding great reward.

We have read an account of a noble prince who carried the picture of his father always near his heart and on important occasions when there was danger of forgetting him, he would take out the likeness and view it and say, “Let me do nothing unbecoming so excellent a father.” As Christians, God has claims upon us that we should never, never lose sight of for a moment; and as we are His children by adoption, how careful should we be that we retain His image and do nothing that will belittle or degrade our holy calling, for we rank among the royal family. God has made us as vessels unto honor, prepared unto every good work. “This people have I formed for myself; they shall shew forth my praise.” Isaiah 43:21. God’s people are called a crown, a diadem. Satan would eagerly seize the Lord’s treasure, but God has secured it so that Satan cannot obtain it. “Thou shalt be a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God.” Isaiah 62:3. We are secure, perfectly secure from the enemy’s subtlety while we have unwavering trust in God.” 31Letter 8, 1873.

PK 500.2

God has made plain that whosoever will, may come “into the bond of the covenant.” Ezekiel 20:37. In the creation it was His purpose that the earth should be inhabited by beings whose existence would be a blessing to themselves and to one another, and an honor to their Creator. All who will may identify themselves with this purpose. Of them it is spoken, “This people have I formed for Myself; they shall show forth My praise.” Isaiah 43:21.

God’s Hand in History, January 19

HB 34.4

The Bible reveals the true philosophy of history. In those words of matchless beauty and tenderness spoken by the apostle Paul to the sages of Athens is set forth God’s purpose in the creation and distribution of races and nations: He “hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; that they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after Him, and find Him.” (Acts 17:26, 27.) God declares that whosoever will may come “into the bond of the covenant.” (Ezekiel 20:37.) In the creation it was His purpose that the earth be inhabited by beings whose existence should be a blessing to themselves and to one another, and an honor to their Creator. All who will may identify themselves with this purpose. Of them it is spoken, “This people have I formed for Myself; they shall show forth My praise.” (Isaiah 43:21.)

And again the Lord speaks of His being misused, dishonored. “But thou hast not called upon me, O Jacob; but thou hast been weary of me, O Israel. Thou hast not brought me the small cattle of thy burnt offerings; neither hast thou honored me with thy sacrifices. I have not caused thee to serve with an offering, nor wearied thee with incense. Thou hast brought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy sacrifices; but thou hast made me to serve with thy sins, thou hast wearied me with thine iniquities. I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.” [Isaiah 43:22-25.]

11LtMs, Lt 153, 1896, par. 15

This is the true picture of the many who feel competent to order and to dictate and rule others as with a rod of iron. Isaiah 43:22-28. Again I say, let us hide self in Jesus. We must have a deep and living experience in the things of God. We must walk humbly with God. We must have an individuality ourselves in Jesus Christ, and the Lord will be our sun and our shield. Enoch walked with God. We may walk with God. We must keep the communication open between God and our own souls. The Lord God is our God. We will praise Him.

Why will you carry your burden of sins when Christ has become your burdenbearer. Roll your sins at the foot of the cross, unload, unload. “He taketh away the sins of the world.” [John 1:29.] Listen and hear what this voice saith. “I even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember they sins.” Isaiah 43:25.

Put me in remembrance; let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified.” [Isaiah 43:25, 26.] “I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth. I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain: I the Lord speak righteousness, I declare things that are right.” “Look unto me and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am the Lord, and there is none else.” [Isaiah 45:19, 22.] Respond to the calls of God’s mercy, my sister, and say, I will trust in the Lord and be comforted; for thou hast loved me. What shall be done to meet our responsibilities? How shall we make proper use of the opportunities presented? There must be prayer, earnest, humble prayer; there must be determined wrestling with God for the endowment of His Holy Spirit. “Put me in remembrance:” saith the Lord, “let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified.” [Isaiah 43:26.] Take your Bibles and present the promises of God before the throne of grace. He says, “Ask, and it shall be given you. ... For every one that asketh receiveth. ... If a son ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children; how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” [Luke 11:9-13.] Believe that the Lord does just as He said He would. Go to work in faith. Hold fast to every point of vantage ground gained. However strong the opposition may be, there must be no weakening. Hold fast by faith. Work and pray, watch and wait, hope and trust, leave everything to God. He can thresh mountains with a worm.
